Cure yourself Jim you have OCD. Transfer your compulsion to cleaning lavatories....or reading the Daily Mail.

Not a bad report and looks like fun was had by all. I do think the reporter should check the facts though as at no point (according to the results) were all 74 competitors on the water at the same time.

maybe they decided not to publish them?  Who knows, their prerogative.... maybe it was just a bit of fun on the side, a practice race or something and publishing the results would just add confusion.

Either way  I think the reporter probably has her facts pretty damn straight and if 'the handicap race with all 74 boats on the start line ... got underway in around 8-10 knots' then I'd certainly not question her integrity, nor clutch at straws analysing the results table in an attempt to discredit the event.   Wink

2nd PY race certainly had 72 competitors on the start line and Saturday races show at least 73 on the water, so pretty impressive numbers all-round for a first Nationals!

You're making the assumption all DNCs were really DNCs and not some other code.

Not always true, busy race teams, especially with 70 plus boats about, may not always be very good at differentiating DNC from say "started completely buried at the far end of the line, invisible from the commiteee boat, and retired after a prolonged capsize on the first lap" or even "got to the start line, capsized, bruised their leg and retired hurt". When its the same points many folk don't bother hassling the scorers to get the code corrected.

What else can be assumed? DNC is defined in the RRS as Did not come to the starting area. They would (or should) have had a tally system so they should know who is on the water at all times.

And KW I am not trying to discredit the event at all just a little bit of accuracy would be nice.

As I said looks like they had a great event and credit the them for getting that many boats out for a first nationals.

Having just returned from the 'Ball worlds in Pwllheli, I overheard just this discussion between the PRO and a competitor. There was no 'audit' of tallies vs results. Tallies are there to ensure everyone is accounted for. Tallying out says 'I intend to go afloat'. It says neither 'I intend to race' nor 'I will start'. Tallying in says 'I'm home and safe'. It doesn't say 'I raced'. The race team cannot differentiate between DNC / DNF without input from the competitor, and when the points are the same, why bother?

The only irritating thing I see in all of this was the need to put bullsh*t four figure sail no's out there, it's a great boat has an excellent take up, but who needs four figures when they've yet to finish building three?

If yours is number 689 built, you might be quite pleased the sail number a 1689 when you come to sell it against a boat only half a year newer with hull number 1025 for example.... there's a larger range between 1000 and 10,000 than between 0 and 999.... it makes sense, especially when the company has given due consideration to the residual values as part of the overall market positioning.

Of course other classes allow and actively encourage PSNs, which makes the job as the aftermarket buyer all the trickier... you need to look for the HIN rather than the sail number.  Or worse, simply rely on the integrity of the seller to not misrepresent the age of their boat when the HIN becomes too complex to trace.
