Agreed, KW. Looked at thes and wondered about swapping classes, till I remembered that I sail a boat which has good events too, even if numbers are lower, and that the 3 boats of that class we own cost about 1/5 of one boat in the Aero class, thanks to the wonders of the secondhand market.

Very impressive, 73!  It did occur to me however that those 73 helms have not materialised from nowhere. This huge instant turnout is at the expense of other classes. 'one mans loss is another mans gain'. Rather galling if one has been trying to promote another class. At least one of those helms is from the 'class that dare not speak it's name'.

You're making the assumption this is a zero sum game. Not as simple as that. If we just think of Champs turnouts, do you suppose every one of those people went to a Champs in a different class last year that they won't go to this year, or is it possible some of them are full of new enthusiasm and going to a champs for the first time or first time for a while?

Every class has people who own boats but for one reason or another are a bit down on enthusiasm and don't actually use them. If those people get enthused by a different class and start sailing regularly their old class is no worse off. Indeed it may be better off, since a decent boat may come on the market and be available for someone moving out of junior classes.

So its not a zero sum game, its not one wins, the other loses, and a burst of enthusiasm for a new class or competition conceivably could benefit everyone.

Jim, not for the first time you have used plausible arguments to counter my prejudiced rants. Please stop doing this. Please visualise an emoticon of a wink.......

We've got a new member with an Aero 9, first time sailor by all counts, so it's not all class robbery.
