PY has nothing to do with Class Associations, Affiliated Class Associations or Owners Groups.

Good point, well made. Still, you do get the cheaper floor space at ally pally. And, as others have said, a sense of security and governance behind the association. And I am very grateful for all the work my fellow DZeroers have put in to get a constitution, rules etc in place. Well done chaps.

Classes get a much cheaper spot at the dinghy show, which is an RYA production, than a commercial exhibitor. That's a good benefit.

The topic of whether a class is affiliated or not had never come up in a PYAG meeting I've been involved with. I have, for instance, no idea whether there's an affiliated Icon CA or not. But my dim memory is that for any class which is organised enough to have a presence at Sailboat then its very easy to make a good case to be affiliated.

Yes, setting up a Class association is a good thing, but I thought the press release was way OTT, reading as if affiliation demonstrates some kind of enhanced status or approval by the RYA in the way being a National or International Class is intended to.

Its a long time since I've had to think about these things (I even had to look up what affiliation is, and I got no useful results for a search of the string affiliated class), but AIUI, if GRF set up the West Kent Boat Burning Society, with a view to buying up old wooden boats, racing them at a regatta and then burning them in a big barbecue on the beach afterwards then they'd be at liberty to affiliate to the RYA once they had thirty or so members.

That's a ridiculous thing to suggest, why would I even consider it?

I live in East Kent.

Well Jim, the release as mentioned before was in no way commercial.  We had been holding off announcing the formation until we were ratified by the RYA.  Something that was felt to be important, perhaps you can think of it as a stamp of approval or making things official.  Which it now is.  We have a set of class rules, a constitution all of which are needed to become an official class in the RYA's eyes, much like making a sailing club ratified.

Read into it with whichever slant you like.  Those are the facts.

As far as the class goes, we now have an association.  We are in the process of selecting a venue for our first meeting where a committee can be voted in. My he then elected members will set about their duties and (I hope) provide the association members with a long term foundation for which the class to grow.  Not to mention the press release also mentions we have now agreed our first national championships...must be something commercial in there as well hey?

The zero committee will be made up of members, not run as a business by a business.  No one will be paid and it will be run by volunteers.

RYA affiliation to one side, very few member of this forum can deny its a pretty big landmark in the early development of class when a class association is formed.  What's also impressive in my opinion is that we have come this far since March when the boat was launched at the show.

I have, for instance, no idea whether there's an affiliated Icon CA or not.

Why specifically mention Icon here ?  But as some might not know the facts ...the Icon CA  made affiliation part of its initial plans some time ago. It is easy enough for owners in any class to organise themselves if they have the will and then you just have to find the fees.

How else would Icon have benefitted from an officially listed EN and so soon ?   It is clearly one of the key benefits ...

I'm a member of a CA not affiliated to the RYA, simply because we have no money (no fees) and only a few members. If we grew large enough to think about such things, affiliation would be high on the list of things to get, as there are other benefits, including legal help if needed. With no new boats, the Dinghy Show wouldn't seem like a good use of funds.

Never thought that was in the Solent, but nice windsurfing spot it is. Is the sand bar still there about hundred yards offshore, ready to catch your skeg?
