Came across this graph on the RYA site looking at barriers to people taking up sailing,  bears out some of what is being said across this thread  :

So could almost certainly work for a leasing company to encourage access.

Thanks for posting this, interesting.  How the hell they seperated out "technical" and "sophisticated" is beyond me. Glad sailing is more fun than rowing, personally I find rowing bloody hard work!

Unfortunately, I think "sailing" and "elitist" are forever joined at the hip in joe public's head.  I really don't think there's anything, barr a long running multi-media campaign, that could be done to change it, even then I doubt it would succeed for long.  The fact is, like "rock climbing" and "dangerous" or "cave diving" and "crazy" are word association for me, I think it could be so well embedded that only generations of change will resolve it, after all, before gentleman's yachting, the only people generally engaged in sailing where either the navy or fishermen - hardly okay-yah elitist.

Apparently when the Daily Mirror back in the early 60s were considering which leisure activity to back they asked their readers what sport they saw as the most aspirational,  sailing came out top by a clear margin and they got behind what became the Mirror Dinghy.  Importantly they then threw all their marketing might behind it,  even had a whole department on the paper's payroll just devoted to the class.   This probably got more people into sailing than anything else,  quite ironic when you consider the demographics of the Red Tops.

These days it would be brands like Apple,  Google,  Red Bull etc to create the same catalytic effect.

red bull are into sponsoring far more image conscious aspects of the sport:

As for Apple, no chance.  It takes 40 years to get sailors to change classes en masse, no chance the iBoat 2.0 would meet its pre-release sales target.

Google - well that's an interesting one.  The search for the perfect boat is endless.

Sorry, fab though that pic of the big waves and wind surfer is, I don't buy the dinghy sailing isn't image conscious stuff, nor that kite surfing is the only cool or on-trend thing to do.  Dinghy sailing is not wooden boats and beer towels on one piece suits any more, perhaps it would be more edgy and niche if it was a bit more quirky.  The elitist tag on sailing has been bestowed by media and can be dispelled by the same forces.

Very true, but in that quest I bet the demographic marketing spend for redbull is more kitesurfing , whereas dinghy sailing would be better sticking with Ruddles....
