But he's right though (in a way). It's not apparent wind as its the effect of having increased water flow under the hull for the same track speed when going up-tide. Apparent wind effect would result in a greater track speed when going down-tide, but that wasn't the question.

Oh dear, he's gathering disciples. How do you suppose you get the increased water flow? We're presuming the board is not anchored, I guess, or getting any other drive force than that provided by the wind.

Morons.
It's a wonder any of you get your boats going. So now lets go back to basics shall we, like how does our sail boat move? Wind drives it forward, then it creates it's own wind which as the speed increases (only at a vector mind) it contributes, note contributes, doesn't generate the movement in the first place, so created wind contributes to the actual wind which drives the boat. Now, lets say jimbo had no wind at all, zero. Then along came that friendly tide pushing him in a sideways direction at say 4knots which isn't unlikely at Daymer, oh, what would we have? We would have a 4 knot air movement on the sail. Which would then drive him forward, to an extent he might even generate some created airflow from the nose and then some apparent wind. Whoever taught you lot what you think you know, clearly didn't did he? Edited by iGRF - 30 Mar 13 at 2:59pm |

Deckchair and popcorn now postioned for the view ... looks like it is shaping up to be a classic GRF 'debate'. And absolutely there is NO way I'm going to add anything myself ... that would simply spoil the fun.
Can't wait until Mondays contributions .. or are we already there in this particular part of the parallel universe ! ![]() Mike L. |

You're right, Mike. Said my piece; best to wait for reinforcements* now.

Increased water flow. It amazes me how the presence of the land confuses people.
Try to imagine what would be happening in the middle of the Atlantic outside of the sight of land and with no instruments or anchor. Could you tell the difference between 0knots wind speed and 5 knots current and 5 knots wind speed and 0 current? |
