Ah, yep I do that a bit in the solution of joy, it seems to help stave off the lasers but haven't had chance to test it against solutions, but then if it works chances are they'll all do it anyway. Must fit that elastic autopump feature, sounds like just what I need, there's no back stroke like you get with windsurfers and the delay can be really annoying.

Kiting downwind is a common enough place term.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGsSqYcn5Sg (rubbish vid) Also pushes more sail area further from the surface of the water and into faster moving air. I've never seen it done Solos. |

Call it kiting, windward heel, veel heel, whatever you like.
Reducing the wetted area and getting the C of E over the C of R means the boat (should) go faster. It works with varying degrees depending on hull shape as some shapes are more prone to hull steer when heeled than others. I found with the Laser you really could get the boat well up on the ear and keep it balanced with a neutral rudder. Only really worked on flat water though, lumps you are better steering through). Conversely with the D-Zero I find it does not pay to heel anywhere near as much as I find I need to have the rudder over a bit to counteract hull steer. There is definitely a balance to be found. I would imagine the Solo is the same, plus the more you heel the higher the boom goes and it may over power the elastic causing in impromptu gybe. I will speak to one of the Solo guys when I am next at the club.

Dunno about the Aero, but I'm going to use that excuse next time I roll into windward. "Nope, I wasn't being a klutz - I just have an especially unstable boom and even my mad skillz weren't enough to compensate." |

Some windward heel is fast on the Solo when running by the lee. Equilibrium with no pressure on the rudder downwind has to be fast. I am not sure that the bungee assists cheating, but it does stop the boom bouncing around and knocking the wind out of the sails if there is any chop. If there is any pressure and no chop the bungee is probably more of a hindrance since it tends to tighten the leech. In seven years of Solo sailing I have never experienced unintended gybing due to the boom bungee tension.

Exactly like that and that is about as far as they go usually.

How does that fit with Rule 52 Manual Power? |

I shall await comments from a higher authority, but the operation of the bungee is by a combination of the power of the crew and the pressure of the wind, no different to the sheets or controls on a boat ... This does beg the question of Rule 52, that as this rule is written the pressure of the wind to let a sail out contravenes the rule ... No doubt there is an appeal or interpretation that deals with this.
