I notice there are already a couple on the site for sale. One of them specifies a "downwind boom stabiliser"... What is one of those?!

Is the aero fitted with an especially unstable boom???

From the class rules: "A “J.C” strap may be fitted to pull the boom forward whilst sailing downwind. The maximum elastic thickness permitted is 8mm."

Basically a big piece of shockcord from either side of the boom to a bow fitting. Finns and OKs use them I think, helps to hold the boom forward when sailing deep downwind.

I believe it is a thick bit of shock cord, Solo/Finn style (also known as a JC strap) that goes from the Kicker fitting on the boom to the bow.

Some classes don't like them as they are seen as an aid to pumping (and have it written into the rules that you cannot have them).

JC strap was pretty fundamental in the Solo, I could imagine it would be useful on rotational unstayed rigs too.

Definitely RE the Solo otherwise you cannot heel to windward on a run in light airs as the boom is too heavy.

hmm do you want to kite a Solo downwind, I never found it the fastest, not on Winder Mk2 I had anyway.  Best keep it flat as f*ck, speed was then determined by fore and aft trim.... and it was tricky and technical to maintain, especially when too heavy for one in the first place.

The quick guys at Hunts always kite a little when going deep downwind (top 5 or so nationally). Nothing like as much as say a Laser does though.

How do they aid pumping?

Think very light conditions when without the thing you'd have to keep a hand on the boom to keep the main right out.

I see that, but that's not pumping.
