Yes that's the one iGRF. I fully accept that the Supernova sail looks a slightly unusual shape, but it works very well indeed over a wide range. I don't mind the ally mast, but the rigs only real downside is because of the sail cut, the boom is overlong so until you are used to it, it can catch you out on the bear away. It's also a heavy ally boom and would be match better with carbon.
All that said it's refined and allows a greater range of wind strength sailing than either the Dzero or the aero. I've. Heard all the stuff about square tops, carbon and gust response, but having sailed all three in varying conditions the Supernova can cope with a far greater wind range with one sail. It's competitive in the light and yet you can sail it dead flat without having to feather at 18 knots on the same sail. Try that in either of the new boats! Oh and there is nothing wrong with the hull as it was moulded off a 505 and cut down. Fast and viceless in my book.

Simon i guess time will tell with the above. Both Zero and Aero are so new i doubt learning how to sail the boats across the range is anywhere near developed yet. We have the ability to rake and alter mast foot position on the zero, so i believe its going to be pretty manageable in most if not all conditions. Albeit i am used to pretty powerful boats.
I never understood why the Supernova class did not adopt at least a carbon boom. They have developed the boat so much in terms of hull layout, minimum weights etc. adding a carbon boom would be negligible in terms of additional cost and would make gybing etc. that little bit easier. I would even bet my house that a carbon boom will be on the horizon in the next few years.

I think both boats will be very impressive across the wind range - to the point where sea state would be the limiting factor for both, not gustiness. I think this might be especially true of the Aero- if I'd put a wager on it, I'd take the Zero hull carving through the chop/waves over ghosting myself on something lighter, with a more compact volume distribution to be blown about on top of it.... even with the little rig.

We have two sailors sailing supernovas at the moment. The large sailor manages to depower the sail what ever the wind strength, the other ( a very good sailor but lighter) has had to buy a, small sail to use when it's very windy.
The other thing I would say about the supernova based on my personal experience, is that it's a good vice free boat but it goes though the tack with the speed and precision of a super tanker. Edited by Blue One - 26 Sep 14 at 4:10pm |

Going on past form if Hartley's decide that the Supernova will have carbon spars then it will happen and the Class Association can go swivel.

Graeme you need to understand that in most cases builders come and go but class associations continue To keep the flame alive. You may not like it, but 99% of the dinghy world do!

At Burton we only do handicap racing and then fleet results are extracted from it. I'm pretty sure a Laser class cup was won last year by someone picking a rig to suit the conditions against people who always use one rig. |

Successfully confusing ambition with ability since 1980.

99% Of the Dingy world is obviously wrong then, which comes as no surprise to me. It would be like Ford (Insert appropriate model)Owners all saying you can't change that car or make it faster because we'll all have to buy new ones. No surprise builders come and go if they can't upgrade their product because a bunch of luddite tightwads don't want to have to buy a new one. Those Supernovas would rock with a proper rig.
