Rupert, I've not sailed either but I've heard that the MPS is probably as fast as the 700, especially if its a bit flukey.  Apparently its 20kg lighter and accelerates easier and is easier to gybe since it stays on the plane longer when the power goes off.  On the other hand its more prone to go into irons when tacking.

The RS700 is faster on handicap because it is a marketing ploy... they release a lower PN and it instantly becomes the fastest single handed dinghy! The 700 and the MPS have shared starts at the tide ride for the last couple of years and the MPS has come out on top every time. I think the racing has still been relatively close as there were still some 700's near the top of the fleet so it was by no means a white wash but don't read too much into handicaps as a measure of how fast a boat is.

TT I used to have a Vareo... the best "spike" I managed was 15.2 knots in about 22-25 knots breeze, before I tried to gybe.  Messed it up, snapped the tiller extension and the kicker from the mast!

The 700 isn't quite as quick as the MPS, but why haven't the returns been sent to change the PY, or is it that clubs just aren't sending them?  I'm hoping they don't, or else the B14 PY will be changing soon... and we can't have the PY being correct can we!

Was interested to read this thread as last season I had a couple of goes at single handing my buzz.

I'm not at all experianced at high performance sailing and only started helming the buzz last season. I found that it was'nt too hard in winds upto f4, but I struggled a lot in any more, not too suprising as I only weigh 60Kg.  It is a lot of fun in a bit of breeze, with the spiniker up and out on the wire though.

As for righting it, no problem at all.  I managed 4 times in an hour (3 with the spiniker up).    I hope to get out a bit more in it on my own this season as it was a lot of fun.  Unfortunately the only pictures I have of it are in no wind so its not all that impressive.

Just a couple of facts to put Tim's comment in perspective here..

RS700 handicap number 857 (Secondary Yardstick)

MPS handicap number 875 (Trial Number)

And the RYA definitions of these numbers are:

"Secondary Yardsticks are portsmouth numbers published by the RYA but not as consistently attested as a Primary Yardsticks"

"Trial Numbers are Portsmouth Numbers allocated by clubs until a Club Number is assessed"

http://www.rya.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/E72DE444-7495-416A-8BEE-C DFAB728F441/0/20077PNList.pdf

ie the RS700 number is issued by the RYA and is the more statistically proven of the two.

Ian
