All this talk of automated systems and the like it sounds great.
Then you look at most sailing clubs where ROs are volunteers in many cases set in their ways and then tell them they need to learn a new system. We discussed this at my local club, spoke to some of the ROs and they said if they had to use a laptop/fully electronic system they would not RO anymore. We stuck with pen and paper and have a member who is happy to process all the results through sailwave to get them on them club site and upload to the PYS online site. We have a fancy box of tricks that does multiple starts and times so just flags to raise and lower and recalls to handle. a competent RO and do it all alone if necessary but it is much easier with 2 people and fits all RO types.

This is a "change management" question - not a "technology is difficult" question. Most people of that generation probably viewed smartphones with the same fear, but now most have one and are avid users of FB ;-) .... Just requires a club representative to be patient, considerate and train on ease of use and benefits etc. No one is suggesting making it mandatory, but my view is, at some point in the future, it is inevitable that electronic systems will prevail. Many clubs now use the Duty Manager system and electronic accounts systems in the Admin areas.

Spot on , our club is very similar, we also a box of tricks that does starts etc which is a laptop and very easy to use . All these fully automated systems are all well and good but none of them make the job any more simple than it already is. A club is a collection of volunteers and clubs should always take their views on board .

If you take technology to its logical conclusion, we should be sitting in the bar, watching our nuclear powered, driverless boat on a laptop, very similar to how they fish today.

I'm on the fence with this one, as on the one hand I've been running sailing races quite happily for 40 years using paper, pen, a watch, and a pocket calculator but on the other IT is my day job so I am comfortable around tech. I agree with the comment that this is a change not a tech issue, in the last year or so my club started using a race management laptop that someone donated. The problem is no one thought to run some basic training for potential RO's on the kit or provide some instructions. So we've got a half way house where the guy who donated the laptop and his pals use the automated system, but the rest of us are still in pen and paper land. I guess my conclusion is I'm not against automation of the race management process, but this needs to be a club decision that members buy into.

We have been there too ... and with the trend toward handicap racing, results get delayed because nobody wants to kick up the computer and risk messing up the results. A recent afternoon handicap race saw an unexpected winner in a Laser beating several former World Chanpions by a couple of days

Not really, my club is entirely volunteer run. People don't volunteer the club doesn't run so we make systems as easy to use as possible. Writing down sail numbers and times is far simpler than having to set up electronic systems/trackers and the like. We suggested having sailwave or a pre-formatted spreadsheet on a computer the overwhelming feeling was stick with pen and paper. You can always find a pen and paper somewhere, if the computer wont work then you are stuck.
I am sure at some point things will move on and we will end up running 2 simple systems but for now pen and paper works best. |

Maybe the solution is an electronic pen and paper? Seen plenty of ads for laptops where writing is turned to text - can you do the same in a spreadsheet? And can it cope when a doctor is race officer?
