I'm sure your right about NZ drifting sideways and the later collisions, it was just that at the very instant of getting the overlap I wasn't sure NZ could either point higher or bear away, but it is hard to see on tv

It's a shame it's not like tennis and you have to win by two points. That would keep it going even longer!

I thought that. They were so close that I thought ETNZ could make a case that they couldn't luff without their transom swinging downwind and hitting.

Oracle was under no obligation to give them room to luff, unless they themselves forced them to do so.

If NZ had continued on their course then there would have been no infringement, regardless of how close Oracle passed them by. Instead NZ luffed - presumably to create room - which pushed their stern towards Oracle forcing them to avoid

That was one of the reasons people felt Oracle wasn't going as fast as ETNZ. A different design philosophy. ETNZ chose a stiff platform that they could maintain consistent foil angles on. The more flexible TOUSA philosophy was meant to create better upwind speed whilst semi-foil ( wetted surface reduced foiling ) which was the original intention of the foils. Until ETNZ fully foiled!

What ever happens in the racing this evening, I think the coverage of the racing has been the best I've ever seen.  The way the course boundary, marks, speed & VMG are all displayed has made it clear to see the course and whether a boat is gaining/losing.  The switching between on boat footage, with the sailors mikes, on the aerial shots has been very slick.  I hope it sets the standard by which are sailing events are televised, though I expect fleet racing would look a bit muddled with too many boats statistics on display.
I've really enjoyed watching it and I'm glad the Kiwis' held off winning to prolong my enjoyment!
