So now whilst I'm on, anyone else had problems on a tight reach?
Grumpfs. To quote Paul Goodison (I think) .....Ease, Hike, Trim ! Really important to keep on a bit of windward heel on (definately not any leeward heel, which is seriously not good), hike hard and just let the sheet ride out to keep it flat. Did one race, which due to a big windshift turned into two mile long close fetches and a short run in 20k breeze with the 10.2 - f'in hard work neither planing or pointing, just a long long slog all the time easing to keep the windward rail down and hiking to keep her moving over the waves. |

Thanks for putting up the video.... it shows that getting in after a wet capsize can be very difficult in Big Wind. The section where you climbed in over the back was in lightish breeze, the boat tacked on you, you had to hold on to the gunwale to stop it capsizing again as it span around away from the wind, it lifted you up slightly. After swapping sides. Imagine doing that in a sea way with big wind and gusts. Quite a tall order. Well certainly in my experience.

That was exhausting just watching that TT. Well done. The recovery with the kite was interesting. Just releasing the halyard and then getting it back in the sock when upright. I've not seen that before. Would that work on double hander? Seems easier than the Mrs trying to retrieve the kite from the water while I shout 'encouragement' from the plate ![]() Edited by ellistine |

That works well if you are quick & it's not choppy (like the video) ... if you are slow and you are in a sea it can lead to the kite getting very tangled around everything .... |

+1 Really, really interested in that uncleat and right the boat then dowse the Spinny....i wonder though, on the sea in waves it might get in a right mess, maybe even twist around the pole....dunno...I shall try it though. I thought that the "missed the toe-straps" fall out the back was funny Timg |

Which is what causes us the most problem when the boats on it's side. The kite would mostly be in front of the forestay yet the sock mouth is someway behind it. If we were upright with the kite in the water it would be away from the stay. I appreciate though, if the boat started moving when righted it wouldn't be pretty. Might give it a go though. |

great video TT - thanks for all the effort and the bruises. Like TimG I thought the missed the straps fall was a laugh. I was interested in how to reach over to uncleat the genny halyard - can you always reach that by going in front of the wings? I have sometime not bothered to uncleat before righting but instead have uncleated it immediately as I jumped back into the boat off the board. I'll have to try reaching down further as it seems a long way for a shorta$$e like me. Have wondered if it would be possible to rig some sort of 'uncleating line'

Good video James and I guess we have all reached the same conclusions, i.e.
dry capsize ahead of the wing with boom walk like a 300 or over the transom. Coming in over the wing doesn't usually work unless the boat is slightly off the wind and you can sheet the mainsail a little as you come in to stop pulling the boat on top of you. Obviously the lightweights may find this easier than the heavier sailors. As demonstrated, over the back from an open transom is very easy and the only thing you have to do is keep one hand on the windward wing applying pressure to stop a further capsize. |
