A guy at our club turned up with reefing points in his 400 main and had to endure the consequences in the bar for months afterwards despite insisting they were heavy duty tell tails!

But, I suppose, if the class majority wanted to allow freedom to choose sail size for the conditions, that's their prerogative. I personally wouldn't buy into a class that opted to do so.

Now, I must go reacquaint myself with my paintbrush...or the consequences will be significantly less amusing than reefing points in a 400 mainsail!

The vast majority of Aero owners will race on PY at their clubs, and like it or not the PY's for each of the rigs will be affected by opportunists who switch rigs according to the wind at the clubs which permit them to do so. 'Ought to', 'should' and "for the good of sailing" won't alter that.

I thought we were seperate classes with different numbers? If the big guys can use my sail when it's windy that won't be fair😡 I have had enough of that with my radial!!!

As far as I understand it, in class events it is 3 separate classes.

At clubs it will be PY. However I would expect most clubs to be happy for you to enter with your biggest rig and change to a smaller one during a series, but you have to keep the py of the bigger rig if you want a single result. Thats just reefing per RS 600 zip, Wayfarer etc. Its our usual approach with lasers and seems fair enough and doesn't favour anyone. Its up to the sailing committee at each club.

Obviously as people learn to sail the boat they will tend to migrate to the biggest rig they can handle in all conditions. When the 300 came out the smaller rig was really popular, but as the sailing quirks became understood even the lighter sailors were sailing the big rig.

And you can use the big sail when it's light winds.  Seems fair enough to me.

Its the difference between class events and whatever the club racing allows.

You would have the same option by buying a 5 rig as they have by using a 7 rig.

In reality I suspect you would learn to use the 7 in all conditions and they would learn to use the 9 in all conditions. If they did change down to 'your' sail, they would have a big power to weight disadvantage over a 'native ' 7 sailor and you would make gains off wind. Remember , because the boat is now a smaller part of the overall package weight and the person is the heaviest part, these differentials should be more striking.

So it has to be 3 classes with 3 PYs then; yes?

Just like the 4.7, Radial & Laser.

In handicap racing, different clubs will allow different things. We used to allow boat swapping in a series to allow more qualifiers, but people started taking the piss, so we had to stop it. Each Laser varient is a different boat, and I'm sure that is true of many clubs. The Aero will be the same.

I assume RS intend to run 3 different results sheets, even if all off one startline. But maybe they would do better to run the 5 as a junior class on separate days, so the boat can be used at 7 or 9 opens by a parent, then as a 5 by a kid.
