Forum discourse is pretty sparse now compared to when I started in ~2007ish. Less people, less incisive conversations on interesting subjects. I think that forums are less relvant to younguns these days although to be honest some seem quite healthy in car world as an example. SailingAnarchy is still useful / vibrant although if you might be offended then it is probably not for you. Forums are far more valuable as I don't think FB is searchable. Maybe someone can tell me I'm wrong on that. I spent half an evening looking back through a hundred page thread on SA the other night for technically interesting stuff that would be impossible to find anywhere else. I sacked off FB maybe 2016 as I recognised the pernicious fake news stuff and also in an unsuccessful attempt to encourage my other half to do the same. No regrets re FB whatsoever would recommend that course of action to anybody but lucklily / regrattably can see some public pages which usually have replaced websites for stuff like small class associations, where the challenge of finding someone to edit a website has become too much for many. Ultimately it comes down to the lowest common denominator / path of least resistance and where most people are hanging out which is or maybe was FB. But like someone said, I dare say things are moving on to other platforms, mostly surrounding being advertised to and showing off rather than scintillating intellectual badinage. Cue me moaning about dumbing down, Blairs Britain etc. That said Mozzy does a great job on his youtube channel and the comments are often interesting / illuminating, he seems very dilligent in responding to them but again thats not the ideal searchable format and pertains to AC or formerly RS800 only. I think that Office 365 has that yammer thing that nobody ever uses in any company I've worked in. I think is supposed to have similar functionality to internet forums but pertaining to work topics. Oddly enough M**rosoft isn't offering a 365 app to companies to best allow employees to parade touched up photos of one's pursed love island lips and other edited records of one's suspiciously enviable "lifestyle."

Not that I know but I'm told that FB is only now for us dying out oldies. There are several alternative platforms out there, possibly we could think further abroad to find a home.

You may be technically right about forums being a better format but you are beating against the tide to keep this forum alive. Nobody new has or will join it and existing members will literally die off. For all facebooks faults it has a critical mass, ease of use and engagement algorithms that is unsurpassed. If you haven’t found anything interesting on the pin end, start a conversation that interests you!

Yes really. I joined very early on but that’s no recommendation as I am on hundreds of fb pages 😀. But you are right there is not a lot of interesting stuff on it, especially for me as I am blocked by grf on fb so I don’t even get to see this ramblings. Fb is great at somethings like publicity and chatting about things in the ‘now’. But forums are much better for discussing thing’s in depth or researching stuff. So +1 for your last sentence, it’s spot on

As regards FB vs Forum , I agree the style of a forum works better for me every time, you can revisit a forum to pick up a thread whereas FB jumps about all over the place.
I even prefer the framework of this forum over others I've seen; if the few functionality issues could be ironed out it'd be a great space for sharing.

Joined The Pin End. Really? Found not much interesting, mainly somewhere new for iGRF, bless him, to whinge about PYs and libel the PYAG to a new audience. At least this forum is google-able and Y&Y do not monetise us as its 'product', whereas of course Facebook, Zuckerberg and his minions are tracking everything we do and say there with a view to feeding us (crappy) ads and monetising any knowledge they can gain. I do use FB but increasingly question myself as to why and whether it's worth sorting thru the increasing levels of ads, scams-ads (most), chafe and phishing attempts. I'm an admin on the RS100 FB group, which mostly involves blocking false accounts applications before they too can post their spam. So long live the Y&Y forum, FB is no substitute. But please sort out the flippin' formatting issues |

I’m not sure what the Pin End is or want’s to become. Initial flurry of start line pictures stopped now there’s the occasional post inviting people to open events which people are likely getting from their class. Latest post belongs on Dinghy Advice which can be toxic and due to title has people asking questions about outboards and rubber ducks. I wish the Pin End all the success but they need to explain what it is all about content they expect and post some stuff their self to generate momentum.

I sort of agree on most of your points . Sailing is not dead, true . Y & Y is dead, true.. Y & Y forum is on life support but is not dead . The Pin End is a growing fb page ( as others had been in the past , now all dead ) . But as a member of this page I don’t see much ‘ fun ‘ . In fact it’s rather joyless with most subjects discussed in a very light weight manner. Is it probably the best discussion platform we have at the moment in the uk , probably but that doesn’t make it good. I would rather be on the Dinghy advice fb page or even if you don’t mind talking about sailing in a less uk based way, the place that cannot be named , SA.

Let’s be clear here: sailing is not dead, but the Y&Y magazine is and this, unrelated, Y&Y forum is.
The Pin End, a new Facebook forum for UK dinghy racing has already grown to a thousand members including some big names and some familiar names. Come and join the fun over there.

Sadly I have to agree with your and finally. I have read, witnessed class tribalism and received some ridiculous snide comments from people who I had expected better of.
