You only have to look at the 12 foot skiffs... There's two sorts of faster, faster through the water and faster round the course. With a smaller kite and hotter angles you are inevitably going to be faster through the water, but the evidence seems to be that geometry wins out and lower and still pretty quick wins races.

But look at foiling cats. There a flatter kite is faster around the course.

In light winds you can't put much weight against the kite otherwise the apparent will go to far forward and create a load of drag on the deep cut kite. Then you'll just end up sailing the same speed but higher. That's why the 49er went to tighter cuts and slightly smaller too but faster round the course as well as straight line. There's a Canadian article describing the feel on this for 49ers somewhere...

Then in heavy winds if the kite is too big you can't get the flow initiated over it which is slow also.

But the 14 doesn't have great leverage s you can see why they went for a fuller kite to take the depth.

I just wonder a what amount of righting moment and hull drag that it starts to become faster in VMG to have flatter or smaller kites.

20 knots boat speed... with probably 2 knots of current and flat water and only achieved for a nano second!

Nice yacht around a week or so ago. Not much water in the harbour put a focus on boat handling but the flat water made it quite nice. A bit of sun helps too!

Early May Bank Holiday Pursuit... not our finest ever race in the 800. But despite a capsize a and a 720 we actually had decent pace and sailed it pretty well, but two big shut downs in the breeze cost us as lot and we finished near the back overall.

edit: I think the volume levels are a bit low so you might have to turn it up to hear the chatter, sorry. Also tried to edit out any swearing, but a few might have slipped through.

Can't stand pursuit races, I usually sit them out, seen loads of disputes, usual one is, if first boat does 2 laps you have to pass it twice.
Heartening to see you make mistakes glad I am not the only one.

Pursuit racing has it's own foibles as does corrected time. But as it builds to an exciting finish I find it easier to forgive the frustrations just because of the suspense of the chase. Corrected time is just as inaccurate, but I also find the format pretty dull.

Having that other wiggle stick thing banging about and dragging in the water would really piss me off,I'd have to devise some other method of steering.

Yeah, it's super annoying. Especially on start lines and they're very prone to breaking if a leeward boat sits it's racks on them.

Quite a few boats in the fleet are unused to them and sail in late at the start tight to leeward, forgetting that when you head up to keep clear not only will your transom need room to swing toward them, but also the extension will too on top of that.

On the other hand, it means there's no main-sheet in the middle which is one less thing to get snagged on in tacks and gybes. Plus it means you're much less restricted in where your weight is in manoeuvres . For instance the crew doesn't have to go forward between main and kicker and can keep their weight a little further back in hoists and drops, with more space for their arms flailing. Plus it's easier for the helm to keep their weight forward in light wind tacks.
