Nothing new about that sort of observation. Between the wars the old Great Western Railway used to sell jigsaw puzzles, books and other examples of what we would now call merchandise, all carefully targeted too put the company in a good light and make the public want to take holidays in their area, that sort of thing. The president of an American railroad, hearing this, said to his English counterpart "Do you mean to tell me that you make the public purchase your advertising?"

I think that sounds a really nice touch.  Well done for Rodney and Dan for doing that.... not sure many designers would have the bottle to put their prototypes on a stand and demonstrate such clear vision from conception to execution.

I too thought the Punk added interest, though I did confuse one interested party in saying that it featured underfloor heating when I meant underfloor sheeting. Emoticons

Dan said he is looking forward to getting her back out on the water too. The boat has been in Valencia for the last 2 years.

It was interesting to see how much volume the Zero had around the mast area compared to the Punk - it must have increased the viable helm weight of the boat. Has it made it slower?

I assume the D Zero and Punk have lined up against each other - would love to know what happened?!

Think that may of been me??
I have over the years spent time on loads of stands.  But this year we were run off our feet!  It was great!  So many positive comments and interested parties.  Some not so positive, but i am used to that.  Always an interesting answer when you ask, What do you sail now?  Rodney, Sue and Mike worked bloody tirelessly over the two days.  So committed to the cause.  I had to leave at 3:30 to get back home and as such missed the North Circular traffic!  But hit a pot hole at speed which ruined my wheel and tyre....Ouch!

The viable (and competitive) helm weight has proven to be anywhere between 63kg and 110kg with the 8.1m grey rig.

I can't imagine the 2 boats have lined up yet as when the first production D-Zeros started to arrive in the UK in July the Punk was still in Valencia, only returning for the Dinghy Show. Certainly one to watch out for in the future though.

So, I'm sure most of us are in agreement that the giant Cat wasn't the best boat at the show (sorry Mark, wrong call!) - but what was?

The boat I wanted to take home with me was the red Lightning, but them I'm biased, and my 33 year old boat used to be a nice red, and is now very yuccy indeed, so maybe I was blined by youthfulness.

Of the other boats in the show, the cold moulded Contender was the one that did it for me, though I liked the shiny wood decks on one of the OKs.

I want one of those Turner Merlins but I don't think that I have deep enough pockets.  I thought that the National 18 looked great, but don't see the need.  I spent a while looking at the 505 thinking of what might have been.  The Arnot Dobson 12 was very pretty.  Oh and Mike Lennons Moth was exquisitely engineered.

Ah, the beauty of a subjective choice!
