He may have aspirations but the toffs can always spot someone who is not proper.

least 'old money' has class, still wouldn't mind a bit, old or new.... and certainly wouldn't hold it against anyone who shells out on a i14, fab

When I became class chairman, I kindly was offered a (free) blazer, presumably intended to be paired with some "lookatmyf**kingredtrousers@blogspot.com" - I politely declined as non blazer wearing is a life rule of mine

Fortunately all that seems to have gone from the Canoes now. Too many stroppy Welshmen and the like I expect. There's still a sit down dinner at the Championships, but the dress code is whatever you happen to be wearing, no stupid penguin suits and the like - and no bread roll throwing either that I've noticed.
But there are clues as to what it was like in the past. I saw a list of Royal Canoe Club members who served in WW1, and all but one were officers, some pretty high ranking ones.

Exactly - an old class going back to the 20s or before in the case of the canoes will be heavy with tradition, and before the post 2nd world war boom, even dinghy racing was an expensive and elitist pastime practiced quite a lot by naval types.
That sort of tradition is good and adds richness(of the non monetary type) to a class, and if you want to wear a blazer and red trousers then that's cool with me,, but it cannot be compulsory or perceived as such if any class wants to survive and attract new members in this day and age!

thanks for the reminder.... for my sins I have to dig mine out of the house moving box for New Years Eve.  I do hate wearing it, but sadly lack the backbone to rock up 'out of class' and expect an entry at these god awful winter events we force ourselves to participate in.

of course you can, you can pick a really big blazer you had your tailor make for you in a size XXL... but it doesn't stop people from sniggering behind your back.

Never needed to ever wear one, let alone but one, but if did I'd need to contact Cameron Balloons to make it
Everything I say is my opinion, honest
