Unfortunately the Vareo I was hoping to try has been sold, so it'll have to wait a little longer.
Here's what i don't get about the Vareo though. The main is just shy of 9m^2, not much less than a Phantom and it has a blooming great kite to help it get downwind, so why on paper is it so much slower than a Phantom around a course? Its PY makes it closer to a Laser or a Supernova, both of which have much less sail area than the Vareo. Is the whole design that bad or is it more to do with the average skill of a Vereo sailor compared to a Phantom sailor which skews the PY and makes it look slower than it is?

The Vareo kite shape is just plain strange in my opinion. Your better off getting a 100 if you do decide you want a hiking singlehander.. I've sailed both and personally I actively dislike the Vareo. 100 is far comfier :)

Unfortunately even the cheapest 100s are about 2k more than my budget will stretch to, unless i trade my car in for something cheaper but that would be a suicidal move!

The vareo is a bit heavier than the phantom, but more relevantly, the vareo rig is pretty unsophisticated, wherea the phantom has a highly tweakable carbon rig. The phantom isn't a slouch downwind, and the majority of club courses often won't suit the vareo because it needs longer legs to really get the assy working to its potential. I took mine out for a short spin yesterday, got the kite up and then quickly ran out of lake. What I learned is that unless your kite handling is really slick on a smaller lake using the kite won't benefit you much as you'll be spending all your time hoisting and dropping. Hopefully off to practise a bit today.

I should add to that that the vareo is enormous fun!

The Phantom is wider and far more importantly longer than the Vareo. Sail area makes less difference than most people think, especially spinnakers on slower boats. The issue is that all boats tend to go at a similar speed downwind if the apparent wind is behind the beam. In that situation then the faster the boat goes the less the apparent wind strength and so it requires a lot more power or efficiency to go a little faster.
For boats that are fast enough to sail downwind legs with the apparent wind forward of the beam its another matter of course, but that's another story, and the Vareo isn't in that bracket. To my mind the kite is more there for entertainment value rather than speed round the course, and why not? Edited by JimC - 25 Nov 13 at 7:43am |

The phantom has a 7kg lighter hull and is even lighter due to the carbon mast. Size wise they are nearly the same but as Winging it said, the Vareo's rig is quite simple compared to that of the Phantom.

In answer to the PY question.
Having had a couple of Vareo's to sail against in my Phantom the main area they lose out on is upwind but then so does the 100. Regards Gordon |

Anyway...back on topic! I still have not tried it. The wind (and course) yesterday looked a bit meh for trying a boat with a kite so I took up the offer of borrowing one of them there plastic fantastic Solos.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how nicely it sailed. I lost out when the wind went really light but that was more down to there being around 3 stone too much in the boat (it has a flat cut and soft mast as the guy who sails it is a lightweight) and my technique. I did manage to be 2nd and 4th in the Solo 'fleet' though which did turn a few heads...
