Hi,
I have an xd laser and the outhaul system is fine length when it is on my full rig and radial, however I have to improvise this weekend when I put my 4.7 on, I was wandering if any one knew what length the outhaul rope needs to be to go through my xd kit, up the mast, along the boom, then back to the sail, and finally back to the end of the boom. I would rather it be two long than two short.

Wouldn't you be better off just attaching a short rope tail to your 4.7 sail and leaving the outhaul system the same? The dimension - the difference in foot length...

We have Spiced rope when we reef topper sails for teaching purposes when it is blowing. If you get the length right it works very well. The only downside is the bungee on the outhaul will be the wrong length to have any effect.

Jim, would that be "legal" by class rules?

No that is not legal but if he isn't racing only training then it will probably be OK.
What he needs is 2 primary lines for the outhaul. 1 for radial/std sail and another for the 4.7 sail.
In reality even if he did use 2 bits of rope it is unlikely anyone would protest.

I'm sad enough to know that the difference between the maximum length of the foot of the sails between the big rigs and the 4.7 is about 26cm. So the additional length to be added is at least 26mm. Basically the more "turning points" the more length you will have to add so it really depends if you have the Holt/ Allen style (standard XD) or the Harken/Rooster Style (G-XD) set up.
When you buy a pre-measured rope pack you get 200mm and 600mm so you can fiddle with the primary (usually the nobbly grey vectran) length. I sailed both 4.7 and radial interchangeably at qualifiers for several years and as a guide I've always used about 165mm on my primary line and 630mm on my secondary (colourful dyneema) line using the G-XD style set up. Hope that helps :) ... I'll go back to lurking now |

Stop lurking and keep posting.
Thats very useful, unless you are class racing I doubt anyone will bat an eye lid. |

Even if you are class racing at a low level most people wont care. It is only when you get to squad level and above that everyone will start to whinge.

I only use the 4.7 when very windy, I will usually use a radial, so the 4.7 will only be used in club racing and I dont think you can put it on at radial evnents
