I've been looking at the vortex recently and it seems a nice boat to me, it has 'different' looks but certainly not ugly! It is also a forgiving performance boat. I was wondering why it was such a flop and laser dropped it?

Ask yourself this, if you had enough money to buy one new would you?  Given the other boats you could buy new for similar money??

It was relatively cheap for the performance wasnt it? Why not?

I have got no idea, oh and in case your wondering the tunnel hull helps the speed of it, if you didn't know already! Good luck with the vortex, I have always quite fancied getting one.

you asked why they dropped it and i suspect its because people can get a better boat for their money new, i should imagine a new Vortex would be £7+ grand new.  Probably nearer £9500 with Combis and stuff, you are in the realm of very good used/new mustos, D-ones, RS100's Contenders.  Ask yourself what would you buy if you had £10k in your pocket now and the choice of the boats above, i doubt it would be the Vortex.  Thats not to say they are not good value now, i have owned one for a VERY brief period and i would buy another.

I don't think it was "such a flop", it was just IMO mismanaged by laser.  I've sailed it with and without the kite and loved it both times but the kite really makes the difference and should have been there in the first place.
It took off reasonably well and I think did ok for a number of years.
However, the kite system looks exactly as it is.....an afterthought add on.
As for it being dropped by laser, that's just the piss poor attitude of laser!
They don't like to put the effort in to support their classes.  They could take a few lessons from RS.
It had a lot of competition from the RS700 and the Musto Skiff, both with a lot more enthusiasm behind them than Laser were ever willing to give.

It also had a bit of a hard task on it's hands.  People rather than just sailing it were whinging and arguing about whether it was a mono or cat and for clubs that don't allow cats, that's a problem.

From me though, I like the boat.  Could still do with some tweaks but I have genuinely enjoyed the few times I've been able to sail one.

I thought about the vortex a while ago but then got another contender.  To me the vortex just didn't measure up against the contender, but I guess it depends what you want from a boat.

the same, but different...

I would get an aardvark moth, but I see exactly what you mean, if the vortex was a similar price to a laser, then they probably wouldn't of dropped it.
