Hi, hope this is the best forum to ask:- What is the etiquette for sharing a trophy won by a double hander dinghy? My helm and I are both teenager sailors and a couple of months ago we won a competition with
a trophy that has to be returned in a year. I know my helm is very proud. Since
winning she has kept the trophy but she never mentions it when we go sailing. We get on fine together and I enjoy sailing with her, but sometimes I feel disappointed be cause it
was a team effort after all. Ok it is
her boat we use and she has been sailing longer than me, but I am unsure
if she is being fair or is thisd normal. I dont want to upset her but then I would love to know
what is normal here? many thx |

It depends on how ugly the trophy is and how much room it takes up in the house...

Yes she should at least give you a share of it.
As you say, it was a team effort. Good crew are like gold dust..... There is an informal organisation called the "Crew's Union". I am sure some of them will see this and give you the benefit of their experience. :-) |

It is usually the responsibility of the boat owner to get the trophy back to the club for the next year, so I can see why it would gather dust at their house. Ask - she may not realize you have any interest in it. I tend (depending on age) to try to make sure my crew gets a more than fair share of the drinkable/edible bounty.

I'm in the fortunate position of living with my crew, so She polishes them for 6 months and then it's my turn.
![]() If she values you as crew (which I'm sure she does) then she will gladly respond to a friendly request to "share" the trophy.

Sharring is definitely appropriate, your helm may have forgotten so a gentle reminder may be in order.

Thank you for answering, it seems sharing is very reasonable. Good. Before asking you I just didnt know if I was thinking
unreasonable things and breaking some etiquette or unwritten rules. I'll wait for the 6mths to pass and then see what helm
does. Helm is a nice person and much more
sailing experience so she will hopefully offer a share without me saying
anything. Later this year I’ll try really hard to remember to let you know what happens! Thank you again to everyone who replied, a nice friendly forum. |

Good communication between crews is essential, on and off the water.
