The time has come for me to replace my hikers of 2 years now they have a rather large hole in them and was having a look at what the replacements might be- but I am stuck on choice...
I am replacing my Henri LLoyd Hikers which for two years have been great. Choice number one- Choice number two- Basically I sail some trapeze boats a bit aswell and wasn't sure how much better the long john would be over the hikers. I am unsure whether the long-johns would be as good for hiking and possibly a bit to much in the summer where with the hikers you can just where a rash vest on your upper body. But then again you obviously can't trapeze in hikers and the long john might be nicer in the autumn where a full wet suit might be nicer... The easy solution would be to buy both but that might just be a tad expensive! Piers HS |

Remember that if you buy both, they will last twice as long, so it's no more expensive. I found trapeze boats tend to make holes in hikers, so it may actually work out cheaper (in the long run) to buy both.

Good point, I am swinging towards that and doing some extra work as an instructor over the summer to pay for it!

I have a pair of the neil pryde hikers and they are top notch. Good fitting and after 2 years of light use still look almost new. I went through a pair of rooster pro's in about 18months but they were being used 3/4 times a week.

I use the Magic Marine hikers, and for me they are great, however, hikers need to fit your physique. I tried for ages to find hikers that the pads didn't cut into the back of my legs! (I am a short arse!!). So, try on all the hikers you can find, and try to crouch into a ball, and then imagine if they will cause you pain over a long period. There is nothing worse, than hikers that do not fit your body, it can turn a great race, into toture....

I bought the MM hikers - I'm tallish but I can either have the pads cutting into the backs of my legs (wore a hole through my skin the first time I wore them) or can I pull them up a bit higher and then the knee pads are above the knee. Grrrr. Mike

I have the Rooster shintech and also a pair of Gill hiking shorts, both with removable hiking pads. I've found them both v.comfortable and hard wearing*, the removable pads make it ideal for swapping between trapeze and hike boats. Having both improves longevity and the Shintech has been OK in deepest winter when coupled with layers on top to get more warmth.
*knees on the Rooster got mangled much quicker than the Gill ones but could have been a result of hard winters sailing in light-med winds with more kneeling than usual! |

Cheers for the advice guys,
In the end I decided to buy both under Foiling.Toff's reasoning that they would last longer. So in the end the shopping list was- Rooster Shin Tec Longjohn Rooster Pro Hikers Rooster Hike Pads Gull All Purpose Dinghy Boots Gill One Design Visor Zhik Spandex Rash Vest. I certainly won't be spending much for a long, long time :P

When you buy it all together you realise just how much it costs. Last year season the gear I was wearing cost me more than my boat
