I am thinking about getting a second-hand 600 but need to know whether I am heavy enough to right it when capsized. I am very light at 60kg. Any help is appreciated.

I weigh around 60 aswell and I really struggle to get my RS500 up on my own. I can do it but it's a challenge. The 600 is a smaller boat with a smaller rig so I'm guessing you could do it but it may be a bit difficult.

Many people sail 600s at your weight, you should have no problem

Its all about maximising your leverage when you capsize.....it can be slow going until you realise you can use the control lines as a righting line (grab them all together) then the boat comes up really quickly. At 60kg you'd get the boat up no problem it might just be a little slower.

It is down to technique.
I could right the 700, ok bigger and I am a little heavier but once you do it once, you can work out what works for you. For me, i used the kite sheets on the 7 to pull back on to help me. Best bet, once you have a boat, or try one, do a controlled capsize with a rescue boat, also try a turtled boat, slightly harder. |

When buying a 600:
Make sure you check the screws are secure in the rudder pintle Check the gunwhale for any cracks or delamination Check the kicker U bolt as this becomes loose over time and may need some surgery to fix The back of the daggerboard slot is always subject to some bashing so check the state of that too. I cant think of anything else off the top of my head but im sure the others can give you some more help. What sort of budget are you looking at for a 600? Depending on how much you have to spend, the last boat they made is currently for sale which is rumoured to have spend the last 4 years in a garage, so it is essentially a brand new boat but at a very very good second hand price. |
