To all

I'm sorry if my defence of the Laser was diluting the rule change thread.  However, there's a fair bit of evidence around to show that every time a rumour is repeated it gains credibility, and that the rumours can best be rebutted point-by-point.

Simply ignoring a post allows that post to gain credence, so when the post includes allegations about the intelligence and honesty of people who sail a class, ignoring it may not always be a good option.

There have been some very interesting posts here and very good posters, but it will be disappointing if one has to just stand by and watch people post rumours of corruption and stupidity among many thousands of fellow sailors without being allowed to address those claims.

If there was a simple formula that one could use to defuse such attacks on a type of boat and sailors without sidetracking threads, it would be good to be told of it.  Unfortunately, as far as I know there isn't anything like that.

Its a problem... Few things destroy a topic or even a forum faster than a poor signal to noise ratio, but challenging OT b*******s just makes the S/N ratio worse. In the end the report button has to be least worst, at least when its getting really out of control. But you're quite right: its amazing how much people are influenced by what they perceive to the majority point of view. There was a study just the other day quoted on I think the BBC web site which roughly on the subject of opinion polls affecting people's voting intentions.

As we're hijacking threads.....

It's actually slightly less than one.

Most men have two testicles, some men have one testicle, no men have three testicles and all women have no testicles.

As they say in the good old USof A "you do the math"!!

Actually, three is not unknown, and some men may have none as a consequence of accidents. Then there are those unfortunate individuals who will have testies and ovaries. But before you start that, you have to decide on what base figure you are going to use for the gender split of the population[1]. I believe that the current figure is 51/49 in favour of the pink side, but haven't checked. This of course means that the arithmetic mean average is probably less than one for the human race over all, though the mode would actually be zero

Apparently the male:female ratio in India and China has changed lately so the answer could be slightly more than one.
