We had a period of staying on GMT+1 when I was at school and it was much better for us in winter in the north midlands. It was light when we went to school and still light in the evening coming home too. The accident statistics are probably taken from this period.

As an ex dairy farmer I used to get up in the dark and finish work in the dark so it makes no difference in fact it was a bloody nuisance. I was quite happy to ignore the change but had to finish milking before the kids went to school or the milk tanker collection time would change so it was about fitting in with everyone else.
I think it goes back to war time and many farms didnt have electricity and tractors didnt have lights so work had to be done in daylight hours.

We've been after this for years, as it is my firm Surf Sales starts work at 8 and has done since forever because it's already 9 for our suppliers who were German and had been in the office for an hour.

Plus right now it would be light at 6, means we'd spend more time on the water or out riding after work without lights.

It's nuts not to do it. Cut the jocks a timeline, they do everything else different, including getting their kids through uni without paying.

Is there not a thing going through pariliament and those fascists on the Mail calling it 'Berlin time' ffs it's Paris Time if it's anything and it could be argued more relevant and tied to the old Rose Line.

Having spent 20 years working in continental Europe, I can tell you it was very hard to get hold of people in Britain on the phone. Either they hadn't arrived at work yet (many Brits start at 9, most Germans at 8, which makes matters worse), or else they were at lunch when I got back from mine.

OK, we'll still be out of synch with the US, China etc., but at least we can be in tune with a heck of a lot more people than now.

The use of the term 'double summer time' is really confusing when apparently they are proposing single summer time, based on Central European Time all year round. That said, I always thought double summer time per se was a great idea: put the clocks forward one hour at the beginning of March and another at the beginning of May to September. No more problems with time limits on Wednesdays! Probably too complicated for people, though.

One argument I've never understood is the Scottish farmers. Surely cows can't tell the time? So the farmer can suit himself and them and just work to solar time all year round can't he? Must be more to it; maybe someone can enlighten me.

"Currently, the UK operates at GMT in the winter and GMT+1 in the summer.  The change would mean GMT+1 in the winter and GMT+2 in the summer."

I believe the proposal is to retain GMT in the Winter and have double summertime in the Summer.
It might be light enough in the south to put the clocks forward now, but not in Scotland!
