I'm on the fence with this, but I'm wondering what you guys think?
Are there too many classes available?? I just think that there are so many smaller clubs have no real fleets, especially when you exclude lasers and toppers e.c.t.

I'd go for more people sailing anyday. Bigger fleets are required, everywhere.

Choice is a wonderful thing - if people wanted to sail the same class as everyone else, they would do, surely?

There are lots of boats but once you start chucking in parameters the numbers come tumbling down.
i.e hiking, symmetric, dinghy, wife crew, 26st+ = err Wayfarer, GP14, Kestrel. And until recently hiking single hander with kite err Vareo - even now there are just the three. Factor in cost and 2nd hand availability and its back down to the Vareo again. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

No classes that are cheap and competitive! In the good ol' days, you built yourself a mirror and learnt to sail in it. If you liked it and wanted to go fast, you built yourself a Fireball.
Prices of 2nd hand boats are now cheap enough, but they are all back of the fleet tubs - no chance of success. Plenty of people go on courses and learn the basics, but we rarely "convert" them into boat owners and regular sailors. Literally thousands of kids went through my local sailing school last year but they won't be able to afford a competitive boat for another 15/20 years - a long time to go with little success/incentive. |

Nowdays what do you call cheap ? £500,£1,000,£2,000
As we know cheap depends on how much you want to pay but there is a fair choice of boats to chose from but being 95 kilos and my last crew was 75 kilos we did not have a massive ammount of boats to sail at the that weight
