Come on then, what do we know what have we heard..
some chatter started in the Carbon thread, strikes me we could have a real ding dong doozie of a discussion on this one. Personally I think they should scrap it start from scratch and build it all singing all dancing twice the price all carbon, just to make y'all whine like babies when your cruel uncle Grumpf put mustard on your dummy.
The rumour in case you hadn't heard, they're thinking about messing with the RS400 at long last... about time if you ask me. Edited by G.R.F. |

New thread or not i'd not bother messing with the 400...I
can see a slot for an RS900 though...full carbon, wide arse wings (B14 stylee) - sort of a sitting down two man skiff bang up to date...Oh and give it huge amounts of power so we don't need to have soaking discussions you just load it up and blast every where. |

For what it is worth I think the 400 is a fantastic boat as it is. You can't change it to make it quicker though, cos there are hundreds of boats already built. So all you can do is make it comfier, cheaper, more robust or more attractive. Even changes that make it easier effectively make it quicker in the marginal stuff. The kite system is a bit cumbersome and the jib sheet loads are high, and the crew facing backwards to tack isn't ideal, but there's not much else can change whilst keeping it a 400. The ICON has many features I would like to see if the 400 was designed from scratch - square head sail, light weight, more spacious cockpit, carbon tipped centreboard, low sheet loads, carbon boom etc. |

I have it on very good authority that from April 1st next year the class is set to adopt the trapeze in an attempt to level the playing field for the lightweight teams.
You heard it here first |

So what changes could be made without pissing anyone off performance
wise too much, given that one should expect to renew certain bits from time to time, like masts and sails.. And the layout would that make much of a difference? |

I think the RS400 is a classic racing boat as it is. Like all assymetrics you have to make decisions regarding 'which way' to go downwind. Unlike most assymetrics you don't face a heavy penalty for every tack and gybe. These two characteristics make it one of the most tactical boats I have raced. You could change lots about it, but I think reducing the weight, or making it faster in a straight line could actually undermine what is great about it.
