As it says really ... just to be clear.

Does your club require that you have 2 people in every rescue boat, 1 driver and 1 crew?

Thanks

It would be rather naive for any club to have only one person aboard a safety
boat.

2 if it's a safety boat, but 1 is fine for a coach boat (even though it may be the same boat used for different functions).

A risk assessment (ability, conditions, etc) determines if 'safety boat' is required to supplement coaching activities.

2 in the boat is obviously a good idea, but I think the belief that with only one person aboard a rescue boat is usless is slightly unfounded. If say only three out of four people turn up for duties, it's better to run with two rescue boats with one single manned than only running with the one boat. A single manned boat is still capable of pulling people out of the water if needed (assuming the driver is reasonably strong) and can certainly keep an eye on things and radio the fully manned boat for help if necessary.
There are also situations where it can be beneficial to run two boats with one person in each (and then leaving one boat behind empty if a real rescue is needed) rather than just a single boat with two people in. Lakes which go round corners are a good example of this, another situation might be if there is no other support (eg the race officer) who you could call for help from should the boat break down.

I certainly wouldn't like to attend to casualties in the water(may be more than one) capsized boats etc singlehanded.

Many years ago long before kill chords were in use we had a helm of a safety boat fall off the back after he accelerated wildly not being aware of the sensitivity of the throttle. Fortunately there was someone else in the rescue boat to sort things out.

Any particular reason for asking Inland Sea?

I would have to question the value of a 'safety boat' with just a driver and no crew.

I had the misfortune to be on the wrong end of a 'rescue' by a singlehanded safety boat when i was, myself in a singlehander. A simple broken main halyard issue resulted in significant damage being done to my boat and a both it and I needing 'proper rescue' from another, doublehanded, safety boat.

A singlehanded safety boat is a waste of petrol and, if it is the only safety cover, responsible for a totally false sense of security.

Where is the option to say we do not double man? This poll is worthless without it.

Just because you got burned by 1 poor driver doesn't mean single handed boats are entirely useless, there is alot
that can be done by a single handed safety boat, once it is maneuvered into position the driver than then get up(killing the
engine) and become the crew, non center console boats actually make this easier. Most instructors man boats single handed
and on a beginner course there is often plenty of rescuing necessary it just requires abit more planning and thought when
approaching the situation.

If I were in charge of duties, I would always schedule 2 to a rescue boat.

However a singlehanded recue boat is absolutely fine, but I think that single person has to be a bit more experienced and familiar with the boat. It also helps if the boat is well set up and not too big.

What do you expect the safety boat to do?- 1) get people out of the water and ashore if required 2) Tow boats home in light weather 3) Assist with righting/recovering boats. In the limit 3) goes out the window, 1&2 can be handled by a single good boatman.

But then in the limit I am happy to sail with no safety cover on tidal waters. I understand the risks, manage them and accept them. I'm happy to make that decision for myself, but not for other people's kids. I don't have a personal ambulance follow my motorbike around!

If it's windy and you have lots of beginners/kids, that's different from a bunch of old hands in F3. I would prefer to go with the judgement of experienced people rather than diktat.

A extra boat with a single person is a definite plus if you have a decent size patch of water to sail on, particularly if it's hard to see it all from one boat.

Contender443 is asking just to be exact. After all, the question "Does your club double man" doesn't offer the option "No".

Just to precise quickly, Lancing SC always have 2 people in the safety boats. Contender443 DID NOT want to answer no, even as a joke. He's not allowed. Not while I'm commodore!
