Have just read an email sent to my sailing club  (Oxford Sailing Club)

Last Friday night Littleton Sailing Club was targeted by thieves

They raided the dinghy park lookng for alumimium it appears.

Mast and booms etc. have been taken, covers have been slashed whilst looking for Aluminium.

BE WARNED!!

Is this the start of a very nasty trend?

I had this in from David Newton Crum on the subject:

Newton Crum Insurance report a flood of spar claims today not from the usual causes of wild seas or gusting gales but rather from a toe-rag who cut through the fencing of the Littleton S.C.friday night and stole thousands of pounds of alloy spars from various classes of dinghy, both rigged and unrigged.

It is worth reporting as a warning to other clubs to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious especially if a travelling community pitches up nearby as this is not an isolated incident, unfortunately it has happened in the past in other parts of the country.

Keep on the lookout and report any suspicious activity to the police straight away.

THere was an article in The Times a couple of days ago, the price of alumimium has gone skywards in the last few months - road signs are being stolen, so It was only time before the scum targeted us.

Good job my next boat will have carbon spars

I saw that they steal anything that looks metal and then sort it out later on to be honest if you look at a dinghy park there are lots of good quality aluminium masts just sitting there !

Perhaps the advantage (from our perspective) is that anyone seen taking down masts and loading them into a lorry looks suspicious and even with wire cutters its not a quick operation. However, put a yellow jacket on and a highway maintenance sign in the back of your van and no one is likely to ask questions if you start removing roadsigns.

I think we're rapidly approaching a time when CCTV survelliance of the dinghy park will be the norm (at least the cost of the technology is becoming affordable).

I hope I'm not overstepping the boundary here and I'm very happy for Mark to delete this message if he thinks it's inappropriate.  But I can organise CCTV and other security systems, if you need it.

at our club we have a cctv camera and regular checks from a security company and the lake warden as it is in the middle of an industrial estate which is very popular with motorcross riders and there used to be a travelers site by the club 2
