I was going to post exactly that. Robbins are really helpful Dan, but check if there's anything else you want from there too (paint, varnish etc) so you can combine postage costs.

You can by cedar from most timber merchants who do outdoor materials: Robbins might well do more convenient sizes and better wuality of course. For a board you should buy strips and build the blank up from pieces with grain running in different directions. A board made from a single solid piece may very well warp, and not necessarily immediately...

I was planning on using somehting like Western red cedar in strips of 25x38x1100mm and resin them together with clamps and then coat them in a sheet of glass with west epoxy to make them strong, was going to produce the Daggerboard as a NACA 0010 shape and the rudder with a NACA 0015 shape, does this sound about right, i was then going to place a template on the top and use a router to cut the rough shape and then plane\sand the rest to perfection?

Don't want to start another thread..
But want to make a foil, temporary, then maybe build another, before I committ to a given shape/design. Want a quick and easy method to build one. Thinking of just blasting away at 25 mil marine ply with a belt sander. Any other suggestions? |

Follow Jims Guide above Grumpf, Plywood foils tend to break!

Can be done, but suprisingly difficult to get a decent section, and not the strongest. I've created a usable quickish foil like that, with some added carbon after it broke, but it would be unlikely to greatly improve on Messrs Toppers originals... |

Initially I just want to make the biggest foil I can cram in the slot with it still fully
retracted. We used to frig about with ply templates in the Div2 days doing exactly this, given we had the same constraints. And I can assure you even a chimp with a beltsander could improve on Messrs Toppers originals.. I'll have to glass something down the middle so it doesn't snap mid capsize recovery mind.. |
