Agreed, I do most of my sailing against lasers and as Jon says they just can't get away in light winds. As soon as you start to hike they pull away but you can mix it up with the radials until you begin to hike hard then their extra length helps them pull ahead. As for the 4.7 i haven't often sailed against them but on the odd occasion i have they've not been near me, but then I have no idea about how well they were being sailed. The killer is the Europe, in light airs the CII can beat them more often than not, but as soon as it's blowing enough to sit out pow!!.....and they have nearly the same handicap!! Speaking of Europes though, we had 4 out last wednesday in the mouth of the Tyne, so if your nearby and don't fancy sailing a Radial (2 out) there seems to be a fleetette forming! Edited by tack'ho |

When I coached similiar level sailors the Byte was as quick as the Laser standard rig in under 6 knots.

It used to be fairly even after handicap between me and the byte, in strong winds I would win easily though. I would like to think that I was a better sailor though so this would explain it, the byte is definitely quick in light winds though! |

I would suggest a 4.7 would be no where near a Byte CII in light winds (it would be MILES behind!)

both much slower than a radial generally, radial py is 1101 so the handicap is more even with a 4.7 I used to race against a C11 in club racing in a 4.7 and used to thrash it when it was windy, but it would be closer in light winds. |

As an answer to the question I prefer the byte, more simple and great performance through the wind range with that fully battened main! Light winds the byte is incredible compared to soft sailed boats and in heavy winds you just need to know how to depower it otherwise it "bites" excuse the pun there! |
