HI, I'm keen to get back to dinghies after 2 decades cruising & racing keelboats. As a novice racing helm, is a £ 1500 laser 3000 a good choice to start with? I need a boat I can singlehand and also take novice friends out on, mainlt in solent F2-4 conditions.

Great boats.. Pretty much what I learnt on (proper sailing!!). Really good fun, not too much of a challenge and once you get back into it not too hard to handle on the windy days. Never tried singlehanded though, sure it could be done though.

Also with novice crews great boat to start them trapezing on! Also what I first trpaezed on.. Pretty quick but not going over that boundry where it starts to get harder!

I sail a 3000 because it's a great boat for lightweight teams to sail in all conditions (ideal for couples, teenagers, parent & child combos) - stable but fun. The class is very friendly rather than 'hard racing'.

The same can be argued for the Buzz, but I found the high floor/low boom combination uncomfortable; also the sails are bigger and the boat feels heavier, so my female crew  is better off in the 3000. The original Laser 3000 was a bit cramped at the front end, but you can now change the sheeting and kicker arrangements which makes a huge difference:

Things have also got cheaper since Vandercraft have become our buillder/spares supplier.

As for singlehanding, that's popular among 3kers. We had a lot of info on the old website that we've lost; so far, the new site just has:

If you'd like to try a boat to see if it suits you, just get in touch as suggested near the top of the 3k homepage (address below)

Its not mine, and it would seem that buzzfan has found one. The one my friend is selling (but I am helping her sell it!) is £3000ish but has a pretty perfect hull, all new sails, re roped and new spinnaker chute.

thansk for all replies  - but my nickname buzzfan is a stable name for an adrenalin junkie - the horsey lot didnt know there was a buzz boat!

I havent yet firmed up on a L3000, it seems to fit the bill but sadly despite 600 adult members, no-one in our club has one to race against.

L or V 3000 are great boats, considered to be the assy version of the Laser II although there are many other differences the hull shape is much the same (you prob already knew this ), both great boats in their own right.

....word of warning though, don't let people give you the impression that they are not too much of a challenge. Most boats that I have come across are relatively easy to sail but all boats are bl**dy difficult to race well.

,,,the above 2 boats are very definitely no exception to this rule.

....second edit,

and both of these boats will still be out and having a race when most fashionable boats have given up because "conditions aren't favourable"

I know a cherub sailor that has quite often given up on his silly boat because there's too much wind, and taken out a 3000 instead.
