    Posted: 16 Apr 07 at 9:49am

Does anyone know the lenght for a Byte 5:1 mainsheet?  I stupidly forgot to measure my current 3:1 mainsheet .  Also does any know where to get cheap/second hand mainsheet swivel jammers, as mine is broken and the shiny new ones are kind of expensive.

Thanks

Have you tried looking on ebay for a swivel jammer as sometimes bits and pieces like that do appear

Do you really need a 5:1 on a Byte?

Exactly what i was thinking!  The 600 and musto skiff only have 4:1.  And i find it hard to believe that the byte is going to have a higher main load than either of those.  And dont use the arguement, 'but you have got a cleat to take the load' because there's plenty of 600 sailors out there cleatless and no they're not absolute bisons to do so!

I'm sure there may be a good reason for it, it just seems you would be multiplying the amount of rope you pull potentially unnecessarily...

The mainsheet load will be reduced but there will be a very large amount of rope to pull in when luffing up so turning round the leeward mark will be very slow and there will be quite a lot of friction to overcome when bearing away, so in light winds it will need a hefty shove on the boom to get it to go out.  A Finn normally has a 3:1 mainsheet!

A Laser has about 2.5:1 (but to the end of the boom) so I'm thinking 5:1 seems a lot.

Alex it might be good for the ergonomics as well!

Yes it does seem like a lot.  It sounds insane but at the moment its harder to  pull in than a RS200 1:1.  Now it could have something to with i have a 10/12mm  mainsheet [it came with the boat] and a busted  mainsheet jammer [it jams agianst the block].  Bascially i dont want to buy a new 3:1 mainsheet and find out its still a nightmare to pull in.

Sure i'm a girl who is vaguely small, but i regularly sail, surf and wakeboard, so i'm not that weedly.

Any other suggestions to solve the problem - dont say the gym cos i live in london and cant afford them.
