Seems there is a long list of classes passed over by our governing body ...

and now of course the ...

Looks like all 3 boats have been knocked back by the big guns after winning equipment trails.

All 3 classes can put 100 boats on a Worlds start line so who needs the Olympics?

What other classes have won trials and done that?

49er won trials and got the slot, that class does not exist outside the Olympics; as did the FD which is now pretty dead ...

Any other classes won trials and gone on to success?

Not really true, although its dropped off in the last two or three years, there have been enough club racing in the UK to get a PY number for most of its life. The 49erFX OTOH does seem to be pretty much Olympians only.

How many club races get sailed in 49ers?

Is the data on line?

Beware of being too UK-centric when it comes to classes that have 'died'. The FDs get good turnouts at Worlds still (75 in 2018 and 100 in 2017). Sure, there are not many around here, but still a big class elsewhere in the world

The RS900 back in 2012 won the trials to be in the Olympics, only to have another boat selected by the ISAF Council. Recommended for selection by ISAF’s Equipment Committee but never built.

Did the 900 win? I'm trying to find the report, but I'm sure the FX came out top in sailors' preferences.

When I first started racing in 1972 there were large fleets of FDs at all the main events, so it's not true even in the UK to say it didn't exist outside the olympics.

I’m pretty sure the FX won that trial, the Ovi Aura was lovely, I wonder what happened to those boats.

I’m not sure a winner was declared. This is the best record I can find.

Edit. Apologies for my GBR centric view on the FD. Surprised.

Reasons for “winning” change through the years and reflect a political and economic process as much as contemporary thinking about ‘successful dinghy racing design’.  You could argue that the overall trends have been roughly representative of the whole sports progression, leading to inevitable debates about what influences what (I’d argue non Olympic factors have more influence).  But overall, when I look at it, the trends have been away from two-person or three-person boats, less competitors overall and towards equipment which is (at least perceived to be) simpler and lower cost.  Pretty much what has happened in dinghy racing world wide in the same period?
