Pay and play has been mentioned a few times !
I believe their should be one in at least every county and certainly at most safe coastal areas, for instance 'Mounts Bay'
What effect would this have on my club or any other ?

I agree that pay and play could be the way forward, my reservation is that the kit inevitably needs to be robust and cost effective, which steers facilities into purchasing heavy, flexible polyethylene craft which deliver a sub par experience.

For pay and play to be interesting for the likes of me, it needs to deliver as good an experience as the boats that I own.

It may be that the “classses” of boat best for pay and play might not exist yet, though I would like to think that the Aero might be a suitable candidate.

For venues to effectively do pay and play you would have to employ a bosun, in addition to the capital cost of the craft, so a big investment.

Queen Mary certainly have a scheme, which seems to work for them.

My club rents grant purchased boats, Bahia £25 per day, Topaz £5 per day, though individuals can only attend 6 times in any one 12 month period.

I believe it's part of the contract that boats have to be available for hire to non club members, to my knowledge only happened a couple of times to non members, mainly used for training and members hiring Bahias for family days.

I suspect that one critical factor would be a large population with sufficient disposable income and a desire to go sailing. This is probably why the P&P at Queen Mary has worked because there are plenty of (I presume) young people who would like to sail and have the cash but not the time to travel to the coast or to justify joining a club and buying a boat. I suspect that the model will need to be on easy to reach and use waterways near to large cities to start with until the model catches on and people get used to the concept. The one at QM reports doing well.

the pay and play argument is let down  a little by some of the pay and play in motorsport   and  even the  Farrari that you buy but don;t get to keep  instead  you tell them which track days they need to bring it to

Why would the club seek to limit the number of rentals per year? Its almost as if our clubs are run by morons.

H2,
Never found out where the 6 day limit came from or even who proposed it.
