So reading a few posts, and knowing it might have been discussed before, but I will attempt to start the conversation again..
With a little adjusting within each class, "we" could very easily gain a fantastic set of boats which can effectively race against in a "class" without handicap. Thinking: * Aero 9 * D-Zero * Blaze * Phantom * RS300 * RS100 8.4 * Farr 3.7 * Laser EPS * Contender * A new class built specifically for the BOX rule? All currently based around an approx. current handicap of 1000 and certainly in different condition each class will rise to the front. What we need it the classes to agree to a BOX rule and potentially a 'committee' built to adjust the classes to even them out through different means over a period of time. Everyone likes different boats, but it would help sailing grow knowing that you could have 200+ boats attending a BOX rule nationals..! Thoughts?.. Edited by pompeysailor - 18 Dec 15 at 11:54am |

But eventually everyone will migrate to the one that is bound to dominate, then the box rule becomes pointless.
Perhaps better to forget them all and define a one Design hull but leave the rigs up to the sailors, then that way you out as much rag up as you can handle. I can foresee stupid rigs right now |

and those that own the other classes will stop attending if they did not wish to switch. Don't get me wrong as a bit of fun it would be a great idea (similar to the Symmetric Grand Prix a number of years ago) but not as a serious racing proposition (IMO).

So why does it work so well for cat's (including home builds!) / Why is the monohull fleet so resistant?
The Formula 18 class, abbreviated F18, is a formula-design sport catamaran class. It was started in the early 1990s and quickly grew to a full-sized International Sailing Federation recognised class, with large racing fleets all over the globe. Currently the F18 class is serviced by 11 professional boatbuilders, each of which designed and builds their own boat for the class. Because the F18 class is a Formula class, any boat that adheres to the limited set of general design specifications may participate in all F18 races. This has led to a score of homebuilders and professional builders to design their own F18 boats and race them in this class |

Gross Generalisation Alert!!!
Cat sailors are a bit more chilled out than dinghy sailors imho.....

Possibly because the cats quoted were pretty close in performance to start with and shared very similar characteristics and hull shapes. The dinghies mentioned have a wide variety of hull shapes and characteristics and a (relatively) wide PY spread not to mention spinnaker vs non spinnaker.....
Get something like the Aero 9, D-Zero, Eps, Blaze and Rooster 8.1 as a 'box rule' or at least to race off scratch as they are relatively close in speed (around 15-20 PY points) but to stretch it too much further either way is just a little too far IMO (Phant is currently 995, Contender around 976 or so, 300 985 and Rs100 8.4 at 1000) Edited by jeffers - 18 Dec 15 at 12:41pm |

Maybe because those cats are designed to the box rule rather than the box rule trying to fit existing designs???

Its something of a mystery why the F18 rule does work.
The problem with making a box rule out of existing OD classes is that raw performance is just one of a multitude of design inputs that make for a successful one design, and not nearly the top of the list. So the first boat built to the box rule will horizon all the existing boats and they'll not come back again. However the boat built to the box rule will lack all the other design factors that make the ODs accessible, so what you'll end up with is a class almost no-one wants to get into. It would be nice to have a box rule for reasonably conventional singlehanders. I had a go, gosh, must be 15 years ago now, but noone else came out to play. I could draft a better box now, I think I'd make the boat longer and thinner than my 14footer. |

Do we have any F18 sailors who can shed light on why the F18 class works so well??
