Could I get an idea of what everyone thinks of the future of the Cadet?

With only 48 boats at the recent Worlds in Cadet heartland GBR , is it time to lay this one to rest and allow our juniors a sporting chance at some excitement and proper international competition.

Cheers.

There are worse turnouts than that out there.

What 2-man junior boat did you have in mind with "excitement"? I'm not sure any of them qualify for that adjective, Feva included - at least, no more than the Cadet.

Well I certainly think that punters have voted when we see 184 Feva's at the recent worlds. I'm not a salesman for them but I do believe they are a worthy replacement.
Key for me is the age limits, must stay under 16 and then yes they can be exciting for that age group and a great lead up for 29ers.
Love to hear about any other International candidates as the world is hanging out for a true junior 2- hander.

Cheers.

The Cadet World's are a restricted entry,  the UK can only send 10 Teams.  There was also a open event running alongside which had 55 boats,  so over 100 boats in total from 10 nations,  not bad these days and a good spread of continents  represented.

The Cadet is a much smaller boat than the Feva,  the reality is single handers for juniors have taken off

Have to respectfully disagree with all of that.

The cadet class needed to restrict country entry at Worlds due the the high number of competitors which is what many other classes are facing now. In recent years since Phwelli in 2006 (where there were way over 100 boats in the worlds) numbers have been dramatically dropping for many reasons.
The fleet running next to the Worlds fleet has always been known as the "Promotional" fleet for up and comers ( kind of like a green fleet) which has also seen a huge drop in numbers.
You say that Cadets are much smaller than the Feva and yet the Cadet is maintaining it's under 18 age group- quite rediculous.

Again, I'm not out here to promote the Feva but I would love to get opinions on what should be the designated world Junior 2-hander for an under 16 age group and it appears that the Cadet should be rightly dropped from consideration.

Cheers.

I always thought it was a bit crazy that both the mirror and cadet, as RYA Pathway classes, were struggling for numbers compared to the Feva, yet both seemed to run in parallel.

To me, common sense would've said cull one of them and steer all the kids who want to sail that genre of boat into one class, but I guess politics and class loyalty would make that a nightmare.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Feva (and the Mirror, for that matter) with 8.6 sqm sail need an appreciably higher crew weight than a Cadet with 5.2sqm?  Certainly, our juniors seem to struggle in our Fevas when the breeze is up, and I think an average pair of 13 year-olds would be overpowered a lot of the time.

We might need a new design altogether if the Cadet is deemed past-it.

My 12 year old holds up a 6.8sqm sail all by himself! (and he's average size for his age)

I was under the impression that the cadet or mirror choice was more down to where you live and what the local fleet is than size of sailor.

The Cadet looked old fashioned and grim to me 30 years ago as an eight year old, and time has done it no favours since then.

Edit: Which isn't, of course, to say that you couldn't be an immensely proud owner of one. If you love your boat that's all that matters, but they always, even as a young child, looked ridiculously small to my eyes.
