Unfortunately, we now have a two speed news media - the lot we all grew up with, journo's working on stories to bring surprising facts and new angles on news stories to our attention, most, presumably having some pride in their work - a newer group, clustered online and in 24/7 news channelss, pompously huffing and puffing about anything they can get a grainy video clip together on, wiping up frenzies over very little and trying to put the wind up Middle Britain, before buggering off to the next story 1hr to 2 days later, depending on the level to which it can be milked

They might be small but that's only about 5 stone. I think they pack a bit more weight than that.

Well, at least the event organisers can comfort themselves with the thought that this pretty normal event for dinghy racers managed to wrest the focus of the british media away from earning international award brownie points to something resembling home news! Must've hurt!!!

Non sailors just do not understand. Sunday on our puddle, 2x one hour pursuit races, poor turn out because of forecast. Race one was hard work but ok, a few capsizes but not me. Race two, wind manageable but at the end of lap one the sky went black over the hill and thunder was heard....bugger that say I and sail in followed by fellow elderly Lightning sailor. I dump my boat call the rib and jump in with my friend who was driving.. We then cover the other sailors who do not retire but continue with multiple capsizes in the now howling wind and stinging rain. No one needed rescue and good fun was had by all.
That is the way we do it isn't it? The organisers of the GP Worlds did everything right and after all 12 boats out of 80 is not that great a proportion. I bet the string and epoxy will be out tonight so that they can sail tomorrow!

The minor cuts will probably be because someone dropped 10p in the bottom of the boat and had to find it.

it's the inexperienced onlookers that get worried. We've had a similar experience during a south coast race: Bright f3 summers day and a squall blew through, massive winds and hail, most of the boats went over some deliberately because it was the safest thing to do. The safety boats went around checking everyone was OK but some walkers on the shore saw the boats inverted and rang the RNLI. As soon as the lifeboat was seen a mum panicked and also rang the coastguard giving an incorrect sail number, when that sail number couldn't be found more panic and big search along the coast.... ....all the sailors wondered what the fuss was all about. |

Official Press release from EDYC on day one of the Exe Sails GP14 World Championships Today was the first day of the event with race 1 starting at 12.00 in wind speeds of 17 knots. 88 boats were “Tallied Out” (This is a safety system that ensures the event organisers know which boats are on the water and who is in each boat) Towards the finish of the first race the Race Officer decided that due to worsening weather conditions the second race of the day would be cancelled. The signal for race cancellation was displayed and the safety boat crews were informed that racing for the day was finished. The fleet started to head ashore when a strong squall of 31 Knots passed over the race area. The effect of this was that some of the GP14 Boats capsized, this is not an unusual situation and crews are trained on how to “Right” their boat. Unfortunately a further stronger squall registering 37 Knots followed the first, capsizing a further number of the fleet. Apparent media reports of 80 boats being capsized would be incorrect as there would have been no more than 10-12 Boats capsized at any one time. The capsizes where being successfully handled by the competitors and the team of 13 safety boats that had been accompanying the racing fleet The Race officer then made the correct decision, as a precaution, to contact the Coast Guard should the weather conditions worsen and in fact the weather conditions improved after 15 minutes. As regards injuries apart from 2 competitors with suspected broken limbs no one in the event was seriously injured other than minor scratches, cut and bruises, consistent with the sport at this level. |
