Very light, so why not? Might not be the fastest way of getting to the top mark if you have to crack off a bit, but time will tell.

precisely... I can get my windsurf board planing upwind with less sail area than that in the right conditions.  Once planing off the fin, it's quite easy to carve it back up to a reasonable heading (for a windsurf board).  Chuck in a daggerboard and upwind sympathy in design, and you'd have a pretty smart little package for upwind planing!

I'm surprised they haven't featured it in any of the videos yet though... maybe they're holding that bit of footage back for maximum impact?

Er, an epoxy Supernova will 'plane' upwind in a breeze and flat water, but it won't be at the windward mark first....

Why? Is it because you're not pointing as high as other boats?

Planing upwind is all relative and would be pretty hard to video as you get into the definition of what is true planing and what is upwind. The Blaze and the D-one have lots of leverage so can 'plane upwind' and in certain conditions footing to plane may be faster than pinching for height, especially in tidal conditions.

Once you get down to non-winged boats the ability to do this at a reasonable degree off the wind may be there, but I would think it would be very unlikely to be faster under normal conditions.

In fact most single handers can plane upwind if you define upwind as wind ahead of the beam LOL

I know a Blaze can plane upwind, I've seen it often enough in the past, albeit slightly 'cracked off'... whether VMG is good is immaterial, I'd take the thrill of the ride over the absolute VMG any day!

However, I'd be sceptical that an boat of the Aero's 'ilk' would achieve Blaze-like planing until I saw this video... one thing's for sure, RS wouldn't publish it if they didn't think the statements within had some credibility.

"until I saw this video.."

i havent listened to the sound but the video doesnt show the boat getting wet never mind planning. It seems to go up a slipway rather nic... err just like any other single hander.
