Hi all,

Thanks to a generous club member I have the opportunity to try a Vareo this coming weekend.

Any tips and tricks from those who have sailed them?

I am told the boat is fully set up aside from the batten tension, how critical will this be?

- let go of the stick when you fall in to windward... broke my carbon tiller extension on the first ever sail on mine

- wear your hikers for upwind, sail lower than on a Laser and don't crank the sail in to hard.

- make sure the rudder is fully down and the stock rope is tied off nice n' tight.

- pop the kite at the first opportunity, would you drive a Ferrari in second gear (okay, MX-5...)

- a bit like checking the bung is in on a Laser, check the colgate is tightly packed between the hull and deck seam before you go afloat, especially if it's a 'Robert Scheidt' edition.

When flying the kite, keep the mainsail sheeted all the way out at first to get used to how the kite works.  Once you get her going, sheet the main in and keep a hold of the mainsheet since you will need to play this with the kite when a gust hits.  Also, bear away quickly once a gust hits otherwise the boat will turn upwind and you'll be swimming.

Upwind, just hike as much as you can and go for boat speed rather than sailing angle.  Don't sheet the main in to much or it will stall and keep a good belly on the sail to keep the power on.  If you need to de-power take advantage of the carbon mast top which helps to get the sail really flat combined with the kicker.   (you will need to make it flat if you’re less than 77/78kg and it’s a F4 or more)

Rule 1 Upwind sail it flat or you go sideways .
Rule 2 keep plenty of foot in the sail do not pull it in even if its blowing old boots as you not got the time to adjust it again anyway and you need more power downwind use cunnigham (lots) and kicker to control the sail .
Rule 3 Do not go downwind with lots of kicker on or you will a, fall in quickly or B,snap the boom or pull fittings out the deck .(like i did at 2007 nationals )
Rule 3 Its not a laser so do not sail it like it sail upwind on tail tails go for speed not pointing .
Rule 4 Battern tension is a load of rubbish just pull the creases out with the tension and leave it alone
Rule 5 Smile as you go past most people downwind

The battens are pretty much as the sail left he sailmaker ie still with wrinkles in the pockets.  Thanks for the tip, they clearly just need those wrinkles pulling out.

Paul, please pay special attention to rule number 3!  Wink

for me it's the best rule, for Paul, rule number 3 means look after the boat - though I know he will.  It's new to me and I have been really enjoying it.
