I've been using this app for android phones which seems to be fantastic. gives you a lot of info about your race and you can upload and overlay anyone else who is racing so you can compare. unfortunately the second boat we had out had GPS issues and didn't record. but this is the RS400's track. Seems to be a very useful tool!

edit:........ you can only view the track on a pc(or mac i guess) not mobile as its flash

It will be even more useful when it works on a proper phone, then I can stop using strava and upsetting all the roadies..

Who's even got an android phone?

All the cool kids have android.... (potentially proven I'm not cool by saying that) having spoken to the developer apparently iPhone apps are a pain in the bum. But he is working on the ability to upload GPX files to the site. Also in the pipeline is tacking angles and tack timings. All looks good for training

Need I point out cool kids don't sail race boats?

Literally everyone I know likely to use that device uses an iPhone, and iphone apps are not necessarily a pain in the bum, probably the charge apple makes for hosting it may be..

But that's an excellent tracker, I like it, I want to use it, but I'm not going out anyday soon to buy some android device purely to that end, have a word with him then think about other racers that may want to join the fray, I bet there are more iphones than androids out there, I'd do a poll, but this forum is not really representative due to the high content of coffin dodgers, nerds, anoraks and that's just the Solo class..

As I said he's working on the file upload which would work with devil phones. He's working hard on improvements. Hopefully Wednesday we'll have two boat tracking and see how that works. Interested to hear what other people think of it.

This is an interesting and commendable start.

I have experimented with a number of Android tracking apps including mapmytracks.com Endomondo and Google's "My Tracks". I dismissed Endomondo quickly as it did not do what I would call "dynamic tracking". Mapmytracks and My Tracks were much better.

The  problem that they both shared was that the recorded tracks remained permanently visible. Therefore, by the end of two back to back races of say four laps, the tracks would get very confused, looking like a plate of spaghetti. It was hard or even impossible to make proper sense of them.  If your friend  could find a way for the app user to regulate how long the tracks remain visible for within a range of say 10 seconds to 300 seconds, I reckon it would represent a massive improvement over the other apps I have looked at.

My only other comment is that, from my experience of using GPS tracking with various devices, they are not that accurate. While they work fine for navigating in the car or walking and are probably OK for yacht racing,  I wonder whether the tolerances are fine enough for them to be reliable as training tools for dinghy racing on lakes and reservoirs.

i'll check and see what he can do, he has since made the track "thinner"  for easier viewing and you can manually remover sections of track with the slider at the bottom of the screen. This is also used when selecting the time period for creating races
