Hi there i was wondering if this is worth buying and reading?
http://www.wileynautical.com/view/0/racingrules.html#new_rules_of_racing_changes_to_the_racing_rules_2013_
I have a working knowledge of the rules from last year and wondered if there are any major changes that I need illustrated to me? Can I just pick up any changes from other sailors?
I looked to see what they said had changed and it seemed like mostly wording of rules. If this is true does this affect club level sailing?

I would say that having a good knowledge of the rules is essential if you are doing any form of racing. I have been sailing since the 80's and I have always had a copy of the current Eric Twiname rules book in my kit bag, this explains common scenarios and helps you understand the law in simple terms. If you progress to higher levels of racing, knowing the rules will become increasingly important, as they may influence tactics and race planning.

The thing is that the rules get revised every few years, the changes are usually quite subtle, but it is best to be familiar with them yourself, rather than depending on someone else's interpretation. Ignorance of a rule is no defence if you infringe it, possibly putting yourself and others at risk.

Personally, I get exasperated when sailors who do not know or respect the rules bimble about in races causing inadvertent mayhem

so the short answer is Yes, buy this or or one of the other rule books

Regularly!

Maybe we should go back to the 1965 rules in the cvrda?

So have you bought and read it yet, and can you explain the major changes?
The changes seem very subtle to me, mostly a case of 'I thought that was what the old rule meant".

So I don't think your post is ever so helpful, can anyone show me where an 'improver' using the old rules and not pushing things to the n'th limit will come unstuck?

The book is £10.87 of your earth currency. That's £2.72 a year.
That is less than the wear and tear on a spinnaker for one race, or ther petrol to get there for most people.
So buy it.

I think we should all be hassling the people trying to flog the old versions on eBay, between us we could fill their inboxes with enquiries about whether it covers the '420 winged rudder rule'.

Major changes, races that require you to go through the finish line each lap now don't automatically end after the first lap (which is what the old rules technically said)

R18 has also been rewritten and I have seen a lot of debate about if the change does or does not allow tactical roundings. Consensus seems that if you are taking more room to necessary to just get round R18 will not protect you from infringing any of part 2 rules.

Thats about it really, most of the changes were to make things clearer or to just bring the rules into line with what everyone was doing anyway.

Thanks, you're sort of confirming my imperfect understanding of the rules is not much worse since the calendar changed over.
I will still get the book next time I order from Amazon, since nobody bought it for my birthday :-(

A new rule book is on my to do list before heading to any opens this year - I have been away from sailing for a few years, so may have some catching up to do.

my point was really that all racers should be fully conversant with the rules for everyones safety. buying one of these rule books that explains things is an excellent way to achieve this

Yup.

But it's worth a few quid to have the pictures, explanations, and a mass of paper to slap the banjo players with.
