Given half a chance my Dad will try and embarrass me! In the 60s I was not even into double figures but we had a collection of yellow covered Seagull Outboard sponsored Yachts & Yachtings that went back to time immemorial. My Dad sailed an Enterprise with me crewing, to a small kid this was so uncool.

In 1967 I became aware of Flying Dutchmen, I knew that Keith Musto had won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and that in 67 John Oakley had won the FD Worlds in K133 Shadow. In 1968 Rodney Pattison had sailed K163 Superdoscious to Olympic Gold in Acapulco with 5 1sts and 2nd. Obviously I had never seen an FD in the flesh but somehow felt this was the boat for me. Dad took me to the 69 boat show where we saw Superdoscious on probably the Olympic Association stand and upon the mainsail were the 2 medals. FDs were very definitely the boat for me.

About this time we were doing the Torbay Regatta and I think that maybe on our 2nd trip I remember sitting watching these 2 heroes preparing an enormous boat which I realised was the true object of all my desires... a real genuine Flying Dutchman!

Unfortunately for me Dad dragged me off in the Enterprise long before I had the chance to see this wonder machine launch. This really really was the boat for me, even if we were sailing at the AWRE SC on 32 acres of tree lined puddle.

Away from the water I, apparently, had been showing an elderly Aunt a picture in a book of my beloved FD and, apparently, I said, "This is a Flying Dutchman, but I call it a F**king Dutchman!"

Yes it is part of a parent's mandate to perpetually remind you of these social faux pas all your life!!

Anyway you decide Flying Dutchman or F**king Dutchman, all I know is that this is what God would sail....
