ive sailed a 29er twice, once with ovingtons really experienced dude who was trying to sell us one, that time it was a doddle, and once with my sister in a freinds boat, that time it was challenging. however once youve got the boat moving its a piece of piss upwind becuase shes so stable but not having the mainsheet when your helming takes a bit of getting used to, downwind is different especially if your crew cant get across the boat quick enough in the gybes and spends ages hooking on rather than just leaping out on the handle. and once youve capsized its very very difficult to get the 9er back up and going again. havent sailed a 420 though.
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

The 420 needs more than sailing skill - it needs a really good understanding of how the settings matter. A few teaks in a 420 can make a huge difference whereas the 29er is much more get in and go for speed.

They teach you very different skills and if you get to sail both well you have a superb sailing base. Trying a direct comparison is like comparing skiing and snowboarding.

Heh this wasn't a way of deciding for either, was mainly out of interest about skill level.  But some interesting points, of course symmetric spins are more technical, you don't just pull it up and go, it's takes more skill

I'll try harder next time .. Honest!!!

Assymetrics, you can just jump in and go .. and the simplicity helps people grasp the idea a bit more .. as its one thing to get it up one to get it down, and one to keep it filled.

Symetrics though ... ... pole uphaul, pole downhaul, guy and sheet ... thats 4 things you need to keep your eyes on ..

And I couldn't even manage to put the pole the right side of the halyard this weekend!!!

Well the uphaul was so loose and flapping everywhere I'm really not surprised, do it mirror style with a 2:1 elastic downhaul
