Berwick 350
Mounts Bay 305
Mumbles 190
Abersoch 255
Bridlington 232

It is a bit further but for the big events at the big venues (other than Weymouth!) there is a bit of travelling involved.

I wouldn't do those journeys probably even for a weekend event though I would for a week or extended weekend (a la N12s) but the big venues (like Abersoch) are big because the sailing is great and well worth the travel.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

For those of you concerned that this event had been held in the Shetlands or just off the coast of Rockall (small semi submerged lump of rock stuck well out into the Atlantic which has a remarkably useful effect on the UK's Economic Exclusion Zone) it was in fact run at East Lothian Yacht Club, or North Berwick as it may be known!  So a good drive north of London then.  Yet when you look back at the 2 previous years we see that the Nats took place in Torbay and Lymington, and not a peep it seems from the Northern and significant number of Scottish sailors who drove the other way.

Which begs the question, are southern sailors lazy? Do the feel it's OK for the Scottish guys and Gals to haul themselves down from the North to support the class champs but feel a little reciprocation is too much to ask?  I have a feeling that this is not confined to just the Tasars, but is in fact insipid across many classes.  Just another example of the southern looking south? maybe?

We have our nationals there this year.

It is a fact that it will probably take me 9 hours to drive there ... that is probably double the drive I have ever done to a UK nationals.

Yes I am sure it will lead to a lower turn out, but we have good fleets in Scotland & the NE so it's onlt fair we support that part of the country somtimes.

So yes some people think it's too far... it is a long drive.

Anyone who is asking or expecting has lost the plot. It's just a sailing event. Clubs run opens and championships to make money. Nobody has a moral obligation to turn up,  with the possible exception of the home sailors.

Just an idea.

It may be that there are more local events for the sailors in the south ( within 100 miles ) & if there is somewhere else to go that has good racing that is with in 2 hours rather then 8 hours then the sailor will properbly go local rather then a long road trip.

How ever the northern sailors should be appluded for their desire to travel south but the southern sailors should be more willing to do the same!.

As a small club that puts on Open Meetings I think there is a bit of sense of entitlement.

I think it stems from the fact that we are all volunteers helping our club and not a 'facility'.  If we travel south (and we do, from Scotland) we feel as well as having fun we are supporting the club that has put all the effort into holding the event. If they never come back to our Events it is a real disincentive to organising more in the future. Luckily most do - last year we even had someone from Mounts Bay travelling to Northumberland.

Thats my point...!!!

Its a big ask to expect the Northern and Scottish crews to do that in reverse but no-one thinks twice about doing it every year!  And then on the odd occasion that the Nats get moved north....

I think it is fair to say that, up to a point the more boats at a Nats the better, now if the crews from north of the Watford Gap services can make the journey down to the south coast year in year out, having a positive effect of the event.  Then good manners dictates that when they do go north for a change that the southern sailors make an effort to support.  (Which many do), but to sight as a reason not to attend "it's a long drive" is a bit of a kick in the teeth for those who make that drive in reverse year in year out.

I find the speaking book section of the local library is a god-send.

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

Travelling from the South coast to North Berwick for a 3 day event is a big ask. Approximately 8-10 hours travelling each way. So that's Friday and Tuesday off work the majority and especially thoe with children who need to break the journey up. A big ask I think.

"Too much to ask" implies an entirely misplaced sense of entitlement. Nobody is obliged in any shape or form to turn up for an event. It's supposed to be fun, that's all.
