I'll introduce myself to you properly next time you're at the club and we can have a gripe together. I doubt that Swanage's PY returns would do a huge amount to the overall Streaker PY, but it would be interesting to see if the Streaker is thought to be as much of a bandit as say the Phantom is at other clubs. Mind you, if the RYA's stance on Club Numbers is anything to go by - then it wouldn't make any difference. |

At Deben YC last Saturday the OK sailed by Simon Shaw was beaten by all the Streakers, no, not just on handicap, but on the water. Simon is no new comer to OK's and in the f3 breeze he doesn't hang around, unlike most of the Streaker sailors who are new comers to Streaker sailing. At DYC, when any one dares say streaker, they are accused of swearing! |

The streaker class has seen a fair amount of development recently, like the Solo and Phantom before it, so I'd think the new boats will be rather faster than the old ones. However, as there are rather more old streakers handicap racing than new ones, the handicap has to reflect the class as a whole. It is also possible that the new found interest in the class has attracted a better strength in depth than the class had before. Again, this will take time to filter down through and affect the handicap. If memory serves me right, the handicap is a little slower than a Solo, which would seem about right. But that might say something about the Solo PY, too! It certainly isn't a handicap figure based on just a few returns, so it would seem a bit much for a club with only one Streaker to change the rating with no way of ruling out personal performance. |

Slower than a solo? I've never sailed one but I thought
they were a bit nippier than that? |

FYI the Byte CII Py was dropped (as a trail number not on returns as far as I'm aware) from 1162 which was generous to 1139, now 1140, 2 years ago which is.... how should i put it .....hard to sail to in F2+. Now as Jim C so elequently puts it, 30 pints is realistically neither here nor there when spread across a fleet when racing OD; but if i were you I'd keep a record of your final postions throughout the year and calculate for yourself what % difference there is between you and any other boat which is sailed at about your standard as often as you. That way if you are a constant % in front or behind you should be able to use this as evidence when talking to the Sailing sec for next season. Edited by tack'ho |

Well said Rupert. If your Streaker is a new go faster Rooster boat then the club may have grounds to assign you a temporary trial number. What we adopted at Hunts for the Phantoms is that a 'modern' (ie Epoxy and down to weight with a carbon rig) boat has a PY of 1030 and the 'classic' boats have a PY of 1043. When they race as a fleet though there is no application of this. We have found, on our water, that this is a reasonably fair number for it and makes them 'raceable' by sailors of the same ability in different classes in most conditions. With you being the only boat there I do find it hard to justify any change though (unless the class recommends a change of course). Just my 2p.... |

from what i've seen on restricted inland waters streakers like lasers are bandits, however take the same boat and sailor onto choppier water and suddenly its a whole world of difference. as with any handicap number the right boat in the right conditions are you're away and no one can stop you (e.g. 420 in a blow again becomes invincible(ish)). unfortunately PY numbers don't change fast enough and don't/can't take into account the huge amount of variables that come into play. |

It used to be thought of as making a sensible choice of boat for the water you sail on, didn't it? Now it is banditry to sail a small nimble boat on small shifty waters, and all those sailing the latest assy wonder machine "because it is fast" complain when they are beaten by boats that are nominally much slower. Odd. |

I'm hoping once the nationals are over, to do a bit of boat swapping and
let people race my boat. Mainly because I think they'll love it and some people might be inspired to join the class. Secondly, it will be interested to see how others do in the racing in my boat and how I do in the racing in other boats. It sounds about right that the solo would be fractionally quicker. A tiny bit shorter but that beasty fully battened sail should give it a damn sight more power than a streaker. It seems odd though that the europe is at 1139 but is half a metre shorter than the streaker and doesn't have particularly more sail area (0.5m according to class website data info). Is that purely because of the people sailing it when it was the ladies olympic class?? Jeffers, it is a rooster hull but I'm not convinced it's any quicker than a butler GRP boat. In a years time I'll more than likely part ex for a new boat to help the 2nd hand market and in which case I'll go for a Butler. The sail however is a different matter. Andy Davis at Speeds has done some work and I've got the latest Speeds Streaker sail. Without being too crude....It's the sex!! In fact I do often wonder if anyone using a Speeds Sail should automatically incur a PY penalty. It highly irritates me that I haven't got my own sail on there but if you haven't got time to make your own, you may as well have the very best. |
