i know the new licenses only allow us to tow 750kg i think that a focus should be able to tow nearly that legaly, dont forget 200's arent hugely heavy.

IF you cannot afford to insure the car, you cannot afford to buy it. There needs to be much more crushing of cars that are un-insured. Make it clear that you CANNOT have a car without insurance. Most of the cost of insurance is covering the 3rd party risk.

If that is the case, why then if i were to buy a £200 old banger 1.2 and insure it 3rd party only it would be cheap as anything and if i were to buy a brand new 09 reg 1.0 the newer car will always be more expensive to insure 3rd party only?

you wont be able to insure an 09 plated vehicle 3rd party (i dont think) Its not the weight of the 200's that will be the problem, but a tripple stacker trailer probably weighs 400kg at least. I would think a 1.6 focus could tow it but i would expect it would be over 750kg and i would hope the trailer was braked!!!!!

you can insure any car any way you want, the main issue is the fact a lot of cars you get now can come already insured for you so you dont have to pay ay extra. It worked out cheaper for me to be insured for a year fully comp on a 2ltr honda accord than it did 3rd party fire and theft on a 1.2 new polo.

No you can quote what you want, but i very much doubt the insurance company would allow you to buy a 3rd party policy on a car of that value. I will have to look it up now (i used to be fully FSA registered to sell insurance) and have been in the trade for a long long time now.

On a post 1997 licence you can tow up to 750KG, and it MUST be an unbraked trailer. Anything else, and you can be pulled over for "driving otherwise in accordance with your licence." (Or words to that effect) and there could be a fine and points involved. Remember though, its not the *actual* weight, its the *plated* weight on the trailer that they go on. Eg: I couldn't tow a friends old RIB trailer (twin axle, braked, and weighed about 700 kg empty) as the plated MAM is around 2100kg. (That and its braked!) Check the cars owner manual for the maximum weight they say you can tow .. My Licence lets me tow 750kg, my towbar is rated to 2000kg (75kg nose weight max), but the manufacturer recomends towing no more than 690kg (aprox) ... So if your car is still under a warranty or service plan, don't exceed that limit! If they find out you have done, they can say thats the cause of any brakages / damage etc etc, and you'll be out of pocket ..
Scooby_Simon - Car crushing is bad! Just because the car is uninsured, doesn't mean it should be crushed! If they sold them on, there would be plenty more 2nd hand cars out there. They'd make some money out of it as well, as the money from its sale will cover the cost of catching it, staff hours doing paperwork, and will then be no crushing cost! By the other hand though .. More 2nd hand cars potentially means fewer new cars sold, and the government like cashing in on new car sales .. |

Insurance underwriting is a complex business, but the cost of your premium is made up from a number of elements and factors.... Simple factors are 1, Age - Younger is more expensive It also depends on some of the inter relationships as I am sure people can work out. Older people with more powerful cars get a cheaper quote than a youngetser in the sme car with the same experience level. Older people with little experience may gete a worse quote than a younger person with more experience. I could not afford to insure my current car until I got over 30, but I could not afford the car until I was nearly 40!!!!!! Simply put young people have more accidents and thus cause more damage and thus more claim cost; thus it is more expensive to insure them!
How would you feel if your car / boat was written off by someone with no insurance and so you end up out of pocket a few 1000 quid? How would you feel if you were hurt, maybe seriously by someone who was not insured and you cannot get the care you need in the long term as you cannot afford it?
As for crushing cars; yes it might be better to sell them, but I think (it's a long time since I was in the industry) if the asset (car) is sold, unless certain legal steps are taken then the owner is entitled to the proceeds - thus they have no motivation to insure it as if theyare caught, the car just gets sold........ |

Ummm, sorry but I think you may well be slightly off here. Take a look at the following link, a dvla document on towing, page 4 in particular. http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/inf30.pdf This is a quote from the table explaining what drivers with class B entitlement can tow: "Cars with a maximum authorised mass of no more than 3500kg, having no more than eight passenger seats, towing a trailer up to 750kg. A car and a trailer, where the total maximum authorised mass of both is not more than 3500kg and the maximum authorised mass of the trailer is not more than the unladen weight of the car. A car with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a maximum authorised mass of 2 tonnes towing a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 1.25 tonnes could be driven under category B entitlement as the maximum authorised mass of both is not more than 3.5 tonnes and the maximum authorised mass of the trailer is not more than the unladen weight of the car." As far as my understanding goes, any vehicle with a MAM over 750kg should be braked, so the last paragraph would allow for a braked trailer. I suppose as a brake on a trailer is a safety feature, and I doubt there is any reason why a trailer under 750kg MAM couldn't be braked, it would seem silly to ban drivers with only Class B entitlement from towing a braked trailer.
Of course staying within the weight you are allowed with your particular car may well be the limiting factor here. |

My understanding, as shown by my post, was that a standard cat-B licence cannot tow a braked trailer .. ever. Trailers under 750kg MAM don't need brakes by law, so although its a useful safety feature, it would far too much to be worth it, and only the heavier end of the spectrum would actually *use* the brakes .. It takes about 200 kg or so to get the brakes to activate ... or something silly like that amount anyway! (Remember, this is all from what I read through months ago before I started towing, so I may have read statements that confuse and contradict eachother as its all from the top of my head!) |
