You lot were very helpful (and entertaining) when I previously asked a question about vehicles suitable for towing dinghies. Well the time has finally come for me to adventure out onto the highway towing my Vareo for the very first time so I have another question for you. As I don’t possess a spare wheel for my road-base, I’ve purchased some “Holts Tyre Weld” emergency puncture repair (aerosol foam in a can) …..I’m sure that there are similar products from other manufacturers. Has anyone actually used this stuff in an emergency? …and if so, was it any good ?

Many thanks in advance,

Nigel

I would be interested in hearing this, as it would be a useful stop-gap if a tyre was to blow, and you didn't have the tools / space / confidence to change the tyre by the road side.

Would probably be easier to actually buy a spare wheel tbh. That stuff is horrible and sticky and just generally nasty.

I must admit that not having used any of these tyre repair aerosols, I remain suspicious, however I've just phoned a mate who used a similar product on a Land-Rover wheel at an off-road event and he reckons that it was very effective.

I'm still tempted to enquire at the club if anyone minds if I borrow a wheel off another road-base....just to be on the safe side Ermm

A spare wheel costs about £20 is it worth not having one ?

Seriously changing a tyre is really easy, it only takes about 10 minutes tops.

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't too concerned about changing the wheel, I just thought that the 'Aerosol Repair' might be very convenient.

I've just spent out on a Tow-bar, lighting board, number-plate etc. - all in the same week, hence I thought that any further expenditure might incur the wrath of Mrs Webmuppet. I may borrow a spare wheel for my first trip, but I'll certainly buy one in time for my next one,

Thanks again for responding

Nigel

Check your tyres on your road trolley. I bought a new boat and went to collect it. I found that the side walls were all cracked. Needless to say I risked it. Then one shredded on the motorway, no dmage done. There was no way that tyre weld could have fixed that.

Spare wheel is the only way to go.

Also has everyone else found it cheaper and easier to buy a complete wheel rather than replace the tyre?

stick this in your tyres to prevent a puncture, there are others out there but this was the first i came across.

That stuff is only any good for small holes (usually quoted as 3mm max). I've got some in my bike tyre and it doesn't make a massive difference.  Anyone who knows great yarmouth will understand the amount of smashed glass on the roads.

As stated earlier, the aerosols are really good for a quick fix to get you home and no more rather than allowing you to reinflate your tyre to full pressure.

Another point - has anybody invested in run flat tyres on their road trailer???
