It goes against forum etiquette to admit I was wrong, you definitely chose the photos that made it look mothish! There's even a join in the ply which suggests the bow was a moth! I'm now trying to remember who had the roll-decked, open transom moth.... Some of the other photos do look a lot like a minisail, I don't know much about the ply ones, mine was grp with un-stayed rig. It might be interesting to post a few pix on the classic boat forum, don't know where else would get any info. Looks to have come up well, did you replace much structure? Shall I donate price of pint to RNLI to save you the hassle of sailing miles for a cloudy pint? |

Rupert is actually the moth guru from the classics forum, plus all the pics and more have been posted there.
The structure was surprisingly sound, given how wet the boat was when I collected it - there was a lot of damp trapped under the paint and varnish, so drying out took a while. There were a couple of small holes in the hull where it had been kept resting on the ground (no trolley) but they were easily dealt with. Under a certain light you can see the curved beams (?) under the side decks. I think the whole thing has been pretty soundly built - mostly ply, brass screws and what I imagine is an olde worlde fibreglass tape. More of a challenge was adapting the moth rig to fit, especially the rudder/stock/tiller arrangement which had to be dismantled then put back together completely differently. I also had to guess at things like where to step the mast, forestay length, shrouds etc. The 'dagger board' you can see is actually the tip of a nice moth centreboard, used because it was the only thing I could find to fit the dagger board slot, but not yet cut to shape because I didn't want to adapt it before I was sure the boat floated and was worth pursuing. |

Has any body suggested that it may be an Aquabat? I owned one a child before moving on to a Topper. It had a laser style rig but that was obviously a latter converstion.

This is a Piccolo - sadly a foot or so too long to be the Mogo.

Have you a pic of the Aquabat? The name seems familiar, but old age and cider have left the memory weak... Edit - thanks Nessa - simutaneous question and answer! Edited by Rupert |

Assuming the data on the Aquabat is correct, of course...
