Looks great, and stands out from the mass-produced plastic boats of today.
Have you tried contacting maritime museums to see if anyone can throw light on what the boat is. There's a list here http://people.pwf.cam.ac.uk/mhe1000/museums.htm |

I am chuffed to bits with it! The rig worked better than I thought. I did keep it fairly floppy, but the dyneema I used for the shrouds and forestay definitely stretched/crept even during that short sail, so everything needs tightening up - the mast lurched scarily forwards downwind when I didn't have enough sheet tension on.
Rupert, I think I raked it more than a moth would - must be a contender trait - but it actually felt very balanced and my pointing seemed good enough compared to those around me. I did have a bit of weather helm, but I haven't got the rudder fully sorted yet - I think it was raked back a tad, so I need to look at that. Phil, all the guys on the classics forum have had a good look at the pics and the conclusion seesm to be she is a one off proably home built project. I hope to do as Rupert says and get her to a classics meet so they can look in the flesh so to speak. |

That really does look pretty swish. The rig seems to suit it very well too. Nice job Nessa!

I did wonder who that was out in what I thought was a Moth at the weekend. Looks like you were having fun in it. I had my hands full showing the Laser fleet round after lunch!

That is very definitely a British Moth. We used to sail them on the river Avon near Bristol. They also have them on the pond near Lymington. There was one at the Dinghy show with a radical centre board. So the class association is still going! They are very good at short tacking and sailing in light wind. Quicker than a Solo in the light stuff, but not in a blow. Good Luck with it! |

Trouble is, it is over 12 feet long! The rig was off a Moth, but the hull looks to owe as much to the 1950's skimmers (Minisail, Piccolo) as it does to scow Int Moths or the BM. |

Ummm, Must admit I did not read the whole of the thread, so did not pick up on the sail and rig not coming with the boat. The rig is British Moth. The hull is the general shape of a british moth, the deck layouts varied quite a bit, I remember one with an open transom and double floor, the older ones had buoyancy bags under the side decks. The rounded bow, and max beam at the shrouds is very British Moth, not aware of any other UK boat quite like that. From the photos I would not be surprised if the length was actually 11ft, the OP said it was 'said to be' something in metric. I have a theory that people make more mistakes in metric...The beam sounds about right. There is a British Moth Boat Assn website, the boats look as I remember them, but the sailors look older! (apart from the kids at Salterns near Lymington). In the sailing photo, is that a partly raised daggerboard? A BM would have had a pivoting centreboard with a long handle, at least originally. It could of course be an American import, a one off or an obscure class, but I would wager a pint of our sailing club's finest ale that its 11ft long and a B'Moth. What's a Piccolo? Cheers!
I used to have a Minisail (aka Sprint) BTW, it was 13ft long, much narrower and had a clamp-on sliding seat, which would come undone randomly. Was tempted on ebay a month or so back....

In that case you owe me a pint of ale
because I have measured the hull and it is 12'8". Let me know where your club is and I will come and partake of it, and bring the boat with me in case you want to check for yourself!I can see why you think it is a moth, but once you see the oddities of the hull shape, the curved side tanks and the weird rudder mounting arrangement you will see why it isn't. More pics here. I have posted on the BM site, they can't identify it, nor can the experts (RUpert included) on the cvrda site. I truly think it is a one off! |

I dont know what all the fuss is about, it's very clearly a punt and that
handsome wench should set about learning how to pole/punt it about. Tickler will probably confirm it expert that he is on all things that look as if they should be fitted with sash chords or stained glass. Alternatively it would make a fine viking funeral vessel can I book it for mine? Punt it out to sea and fire flaming arrows at it, put us both out of our misery... Edited by G.R.F. |

Being just a few miles outside Cambridge I did think of using it as a punt! I suspect, however, that were I to stand on the end it would simply slide me into the water!
Grumpf, I would happily burn you in it! ![]() |
